PBRT Alabama Open: Day 2 Standouts
June 12, 2022
ALBERTVILLE, AL - The PBRT Alabama Open continued play with the last day of pool play games in Albertville, AL at the state-of-the-art Sand Mountain Sports Complex, which features four artificial-turf fields. It was a picture-perfect day of baseball with great weather for second day of pool play games over the two age divisions (15U & 17U). Our scouts were on hand for all games played, and there were plenty of standout performances throughout the day, both at the plate and on the mound. Teams and players were well-represented throughout the southeast part of the country, making for a perfect day of baseball.
Before we get cranked up with the final day of the tournament, our staff went back to take a look and highlight a few of the top performers from action on Day 2.
INF Frank Wells, Providence Christian (AL), 2025
5-foot-9, 175-pounds, athletic body with room for added strength, continued to rack up multi-hit performances on the weekend with a pair of games where he recorded two hits in the doubleheader for Aces National. Still maturing in his frame at a young age, but has showcased plenty of advanced skills at the plate with good bat-to-ball and a top-of-the-order type right-handed bat. Wells uses a quick toe-tap trigger with his load, and attacks the baseball in the zone with a mostly flat bat path resulting in consistent firm line drives to all parts of the field. After a stellar day at the plate, the rising sophomore now sits with an impressive six hits so far on the weekend.

RHP Brody Lindsey, Dothan (AL), 2023
Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 190-pounds, turned in a quality outing facing a talented lineup in Post 70 Baseball 17U’s pool play win. Opened up pitching at more of the 82-84 mph range, and bumped 85 mph in the early going with some life to the pitch up in the zone. Using a short, compact arm action with an over-the-top slot from the right side, the rising uncommitted senior showed some feel for a sharper 12-6 breaking ball at 68-70 mph (2350 rpm) that got late vertical downer break with some tunnel off the fastball. He gathers weight well on the back side in his delivery, and drives off the back leg down the mound efficiently. He finished getting the complete-game W, going 6 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 BB and 6 Ks.
.@PBR_Uncommitted ‘23 RHP Brody Lindsey (@BrodyLindsey6; @Dothan_Wolves) stands a 6-1, 190 frame & pitching at 82-84 & up to 85 in the early going.

INF Brady Frederick, Bearden (TN), 2023
Uncommitted. 5-foot-9, 180-pounds, Frederick has been as consistent as anyone this weekend for Diamond-Simcox 17U, serving as a primary run-producer in the cleanup spot as he leads the tournament in RBI’s. In their first game of the day on Saturday, the rising uncommitted senior drove in a pair of runs for his squad with a two-RBI triple in the 1st inning, and followed that performance up in Game 2 hitting a grand slam in the 1st and finished going 2-for-2 in the process. Heading into the final day of the tournament on Sunday, Frederick now leads the tournament in RBIs (10) and is tied for 1st in triples (2).
SS/RHP Nash Pires, Pace (FL), 2025
6-foot-2, 175-pounds, lean and athletic frame to keep an eye on in the near future. Made an early relief appearance in yesterday’s game for Aces National. Came straight from the shortstop position and was pumping a heavy dosage of fastballs by hitters at 81-84 mph, and topping 85 mph, showed the ability to work to both sides of the plate with the pitch as well. Controlled the game by using a quick tempo during his outing, also flashed a breaking ball at 71-73 mph that generated some swings-and-misses. Pires concluded his outing in relief by going 4.2 innings and striking out eight. Legit two-way prospect.

3B/RHP Brayden Gardner, Madison Academy (AL), 2025
6-foot-1, 205-pounds, strong body from the right side of the plate in the rising sophomore class, has turned in multiple quality at-bats over the last two days. Gardner is a middle of the order hitter with a powerful presence in the lineup. After homering in their contest the previous day, Gardner has used that momentum in route to following up with three additional hits. Has also posted a 93.7 exit velocity at a previous event.

OF/LHP Brady Saxton, Northwest Rankin (MS), 2025
5-foot-11, 165-pounds, has a clean stroke from the left side of the box with some leverage in the swing, mature approach with relaxed and loose hands allows for more bat speed through the zone. Caught the eyes of our scouts over the last two days with his ability to hit the baseball back up the middle and to the opposite side of the field. Saxton has been one of the many run producers in the Aces National lineup, thus far has found his way on the bases with four hits and also accumulating four RBIs.

2B/C Colin Edwards, Autauga Academy (AL), 2024
6-foot-0, 165-pounds, is an uber-athletic prospect who can play multiple positions in the field. Edwards has been efficient in the heart of the order at the plate over the weekend, eager to hit the baseball, grabbing four base knocks, and has also launched a home run and collected four RBIs for the Alabama Raiders. Showing the ability to shorten up to put a ball in play when needed and can also display some strength in hitting the long ball. An interesting follow in the 2024 class.

INF Thomas Woolf, Northridge (AL), 2025
5-foot-11, 175-pounds, the rising sophomore has established himself as one of the hottest hitters of the tournament, as he now leads multiple statistical categories over both age divisions. Slotted towards the top the order for Excel Blue Sox 15U, Woolf provides a tough matchup right out of the gate and has been a big source of offense hitting over .500. Through three games headed to the last day of the tournament, Woolf leads the tournament in total hits (8), doubles (5) and extra base hits (5).

UTL Matt Johnson, Moody (AL), 2022
Central Alabama CC signee. 6-foot-4, 175-pounds, long levers, lean frame and upside in size is everything to like, room to add strength and size to the frame. The right-handed hitter has been a heavy asset on the offensive end of the spectrum this weekend for Excel Baseball Blue Sox 17U. Over the weekend, Johnson has collected five base hits, four of those resulting in doubles and has also cashed in six RBI’s with yet another day of baseball ahead of him.
C Corder Hobbs, Elkmont (AL), 2025
5-foot-10, 170-pounds, the rising sophomore has been a big piece of the offense so far this weekend hitting in the middle of the order for BlackSix Baseball 15U Silver. The right-handed hitting backstop started off his weekend in Game 1 going 2-for-3 with one of those hits being a grand slam and the other being an RBI single. Hobbs followed that performance up another single in their first game today, and then reached twice in their other game this weekend. Hobbs is tied for 1st in both age groups in home runs (2) and will look to finish up his impressive weekend tomorrow in their consolation game.
OF Will Whatley, Auburn (AL), 2025
6-foot-1, 165-pounds, the rising sophomore showed plenty of power potential from the right side in their first game of the doubleheader for the Alabama Raiders, as he drove in seven runs in the contest. In the first at-bat of the game in the 1st inning, Whatley blasted a ball over the wall in center field for a grand slam, then stepped up in the 2nd inning and cleared the bases on a three-RBI triple to add on to the Raiders’ lead. He finished going 2-for-2 with seven RBIs in the contest and is tied for second in both age groups in RBIs. He’s a former member of Team Alabama at last summer’s PBR Jr. Future Games.
