PBRT Alabama Open: Day 1 Standouts

ALBERTVILLE, AL - The PBRT Alabama Open got kicked off yesterday in Albertville, AL at the state-of-the-art Sand Mountain Sports Complex, which features four artificial-turf fields. It was a picture-perfect day of baseball with great weather for first day of pool play games over the two age divisions (15U & 17U). Our scouts were on hand for all games played, and there were plenty of standout performances throughout the day, both at the plate and on the mound. Teams and players were well-represented throughout the southeast part of the country, making for a perfect day of baseball.

Before we get cranked up with Day 2 of the tournament, our staff went back to take a look and highlight a few of the top performers from action on Day 1.

 

SS Blake Wynn, Dothan (AL), 2023
Uncommitted. 5-foot-10, 180-pounds, one of the top prospects in the rising senior class still on the market. Wynn instantly jumped out this spring with a strong showing with the 7A Wolves this spring and seemed to carry it throughout the rest of the year. Now in the summer, the left-handed hitting shortstop has continued to punish baseballs to all parts of the field, as he reached in all plate appearances going 2-for-2 with a double, triple, two RBIs and a walk. He has consistently shown the ability to get off quality hacks from the left side of the plate, displaying some whip and bat speed to the barrel.

OF William Alexander, Greenwood (KY), 2025
Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 200-pounds, easily one of the more impressive prospects and performers from Day 1 of this event. Slotted in the three-spot in what appears to be a talented lineup for USA Prime Midsouth 2025, the left-handed hitting outfielder blasted a pair of home runs, one being a solo shot and the other being a two-run shot, in their first two pool play games. Alexander gets on plane from the jump in his swing and works up through the hitting zone, coupled with his advanced physicality for his age gives way to immense power potential. He will definitely be a fun one to follow throughout the weekend and over the next few years.

1B/LHP Brayden Pooler, Beauregard (AL), 2024
Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 225-pounds, big, physical presence from the left side of the dish. Displays a slightly open stance with a quiet and relaxed approach. The power hitting first baseman delivered for the Alabama Raiders in their 8 AM game, taking some aggressive hacks early on in the count. Just missed a home run in his first at-bat, settling for a double off the base of the fence in left-center field. Redeemed himself in his next plate appearance with a three-run shot into straight away center field.

SS Evan Taylor, Headland (AL), 2024
Uncommitted. 5-foot-10, 150-pounds, looks to be the next coming down the pipeline in terms of talented shortstops that have come out of the Wiregrass area. After a sophomore season that finished in the Class 5A semifinals, Taylor has carried over that same momentum into the summer with Post 70, establishing himself as a quality follow over the next couple of months. In their two games, Taylor recorded three hits from the three-hole, including the single in the tweet below. The rising junior uses the whole field in his approach with two of those hits going to right field. He’s got quick hands and quality feel for the barrel, and equally adept defensively at shortstop.

OF Christian Hill, Greenville (AL), 2023
Uncommitted. 5-foot-11, 185-pounds, Hill is another quality left-handed hitter slotted towards the top of the Post 70 17U’s lineup. After a year that saw the rising senior hit just under .500, Hill has carried that same offensive prowess into the summer where he went 1-for-2 with an RBI in their opening pool play game of the weekend. The left-handed hitter has strength throughout his frame, but uses a stronger lower-half and top hand that turns the barrel well and consistently results in firm contact to all fields. Another under-the-radar prospect down near the Wiregrass area.

C Forrest Heacock, Oxford (AL), 2024
Uncommitted. 5-foot-9, 165-pounds, a right-handed backstop who has continued to rake in both the spring and summer, no matter the pitcher he’s facing. Hitting in the two-hole for the Excel Blue Sox 16U, Heacock recorded a single on a missile to the back side in his second at-bat, and even his outs were loud. He’s got a short and compact, but powerful stroke from the right side of the box that consistently finds firm contact to all parts of the field. Also threw out a pair of would-be base stealers defensively.

UTL/C Weston Luther, Auburn (AL), 2025
Uncommitted. 5-foot-9, 170-pounds, had himself a solid showing this morning in route to the Alabama Raiders win. Luther cashed in a pair of base knocks, working deep into counts and becoming a difficult out for opposing pitchers. Managed to shoot a sharply hit single in his first at-bat through the back-side into right field, comes back up in his next at-bat and goes up to get an elevated fastball, lacing it right back where it came from, swiping second base during the next AB. Also reached base on a walk in his third at-bat.

C Matt Dave Snell, Providence Christian (AL), 2023
Uncommitted. 5-foot-11, 185-pounds, is an athletic body behind the dish for Excel Blue Sox 17U. Sparked the Excel offense and got the momentum going in their game this evening as he went down in the zone to get this offering, lacing an RBI into the left-center field alley for a double. Snell has also shown quickness behind the plate in previous sightings with a 2.01 pop time.

RHP/1B Ashford Fowler, Moody (AL), 2022
Uncommitted. 6-foot-0, 190-pounds, put forth a quality outing on the bump today for Excel Blue Sox 17U. The right-hander was efficient early on, ran into a jam via an error in the third inning but managed to escape allowing minimal damage. Fowler worked predominantly with a fastball/breaking ball combo, the fastball 81-83 mph attacked the inner half of the zone, while setting up the breaking ball 67-70 mph, with 11/5 shape to create weak contact and even some swing and miss opportunities. Fowler’s outing wrapped up by going six innings and recording five strikeouts. An unsigned right-handed arm who is still on the market in the 2022 class.
