June 19 Top Prospect Games Scouting Analysis: Pitchers
There were 6 pitchers on hand at Troy University that chose to pitch only in game play. Five of the pitchers were 2020 grads and the other was a 2022 LHP. Several players also pitched in one of the games. All of those pitcher analysis will be included in the player's positional writeup in the next few days. For now, here are the 6 arms that only pitched in the game:
Edward Berry (2020, RHP, Mountain Brook) The 5’10 right hander showed a very nice FB that really seemed to have some late life, getting in on hitters. He say 83-84 mph and touched 85 mph multiple times. Worked solely from the stretch and the FB showed some arm side action. The arm worked easily and the mechanics were easy and athletic. The breaking ball took nice shape and showed nice depth. A really nice uncommitted ‘20 arm.
Grant Hickman (2020, RHP/3B, Tuscaloosa County) Showed nice command on both pitches he threw on the day, showing the ability to locate to both sides of the plate. Showed tight spin on the breaking ball at 74-75 mph and was able to flip it in for strikes when needed. The FB was 82-84 mph, bumping 85 mph. The arm slot (slight ¾) really created some ASR into RH hitters.
Brett Parker (2020, RHP/OF, Elkmont) Tall, slender RHP that really created some tilt on the FB and was consistently down in the zone and did a nice job of forcing soft contact. The FB sat in the low 80’s and topped at 82 mph and he painted both sides of the dish. The breaking ball showed 12-6 shape at 68-70 mph with depth and was a definite swing and miss pitch in his arsenal.
Ben Riley Flowers (2020, LHP/OF, Saraland) Love the makeup of the LHP that struggled a bit in his 1st inning that may have been brought on by the rain he was pitching in. The rain stopped and his 2nd inning was clean and easy. Nothing he threw stayed straight and he really did a nice job of missing barrels. The FB was 78-81 mph with serious ASR away from RH hitters. Has solid stuff and knows how to pitch. The breaking ball was 69-73 but showed late bite and he located it down in the zone.
Andrew Rittman (2020, RHP, Hartselle) The FB was upper 70’s and bumped 81 mph a few times. The FB was effective as it showed nice sinking action as several hitters swung over the top of it. IN his 2nd inning he really attacked the zone and did a nic job forcing soft contact and getting routine ground balls. The breaking ball was 70-71 mph and showed some side to side action. Not really a slider but showed some depth as well.
Steven Cash (2022, LHP/OF, Bibb County) Loved the poise and pitchability of this young LHP. Seemed to always be under control and never got rattled or lost the zone a bit. Did a nice job of repeating solid mechanics which ultimately led to his ability to locate to different zones at the plate. The FB showed huge ASR that topped at 79 MPH (sat 77-78) and he just painted both sides of the plate. The breaking ball was 60-62 mph and showed late sharp, down action and was a definite “out pitch” vs. LH hitters. No doubt, a 2022 to keep an eye on. Just attacked the zone in 2 clean innings of work.
