Inside the '21 Player Rankings: Alabama Top 5

Austin Sharp
Director of Scouting

After the release of the Updated and Expanded 2021 Alabama Player Rankings on April 22nd, we wanted to take a dive into the Top 5 in the Alabama class, 3 of which who are ranked inside the Top 100 and all are ranked inside the Top 130 nationally. All prospects have already given their verbal commitments to power SEC programs (Mississippi State, 2; LSU, 2; Auburn, 1). We are really excited about the potential that this class has. Read below about the Top 5 in the ‘21 Player Rankings.

Here are the Top 5:

#1. Grant Taylor, RHP, Florence HS

Big time talent on the mound that possesses a fastball that already sits in the low 90's with late life and creates plane. An advanced breaking ball that is difficult to pick up with tight spin. Is ultra competitive on the mound. Very clean mechanics with a body that projects well. An elite arm in the 2021 class.

 Commitment: Louisiana State University

#2. Pico Kohn, LHP, Chilton County HS

Tall, athletic frame w/ present lower half strength, high-waisted, super projectable.  Has just scratched the surface of his frame potential.  Pitches from a full wind-up into ¾ release from the first base side of the rubber.  Quick arm w/ low effort throw.  Easy velocity jumps on hitters.  Angle.  Straight FB shows occasional short arm-side run.  Tight medium downer slurve w/ proper shape and rotation.  Gets around it occasionally.  Profiles as a true out pitch to LHH’s as it develops.  Strike-thrower with the FB, around the zone w/ the breaking ball.  Projects to command

Commitment: Mississippi State

#3. Maddux Bruns, LHP, UMS-Wright

Bruns has seen an increase in velocity this spring to match an already advanced breaking ball. He can command both sides of the plate with the fastball at 90-92 with easy, repeatable mechanics. The fastball seems to really take off late. The 6-foot-2 205-pound southpaw shows big-time arm-side action, which makes him very dangerous against left-handed hitters, as he also features a breaking ball that shows legit depth very late.

Commitment: Mississippi State

#4. Slate Alford, 3B, Bob Jones HS

Big time hitter that shows serious juice at the plate. Advanced makeup as a hitter and is more than just a guy with pop. Has a patient approach at the plate from a slightly open stance but does a good job of staying "synched up" and using his powerful lower half. Creates some tilt in his swing and can go deep to all parts of the field. Could eventually move across the diamond to 1B.

Commitment: Auburn

#5. Samuel Dutton, RHP, Westbrook Christian

Big time talent. Makeup is off the charts to go along with plus stuff. Sits in the upper 80's and can ramp up to the low 90's on occasion. Advanced feel for his breaking ball that is tough for hitters to pick up and has an advanced changeup that really creates tumble into RH hitters. A definite 3 pitch guy.

Commitment: Louisiana State University
