Birmingham Rising Stars ID: Quick Hits
June 22, 2023
BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Birmingham Rising Stars ID was held on Wednesday, June 21st at Spain Park HS in Birmingham, AL. This was an open event that consisted of prospects in the 2027-2028 classes. These players went through a pro-style workout and took batting practice using Trackman to record hitting metrics. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated bullpens and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement & much more. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Wednesday.
Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from the event. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release Statistical Leaderboards for the event then transition into releasing individual scouting reports for each player in attendance.
Drew Jackson III LHP / OF / American Christian Academy, AL / 20285-foot-9, 150-pounds. A definite two-way prospect that emerged as a big winner from the event with quality performances on both sides. A consistent barrage of barrels to both gaps during his round of BP that registered consistent exit velocities in the low-90s. The left-hander generates significant separation with the hands and creates some leverage throughout his swing. He has a quick barrel to contact and extends through contact well while working gap-to-gap within his approach. Hopped on the mound and worked up to 79 mph to go along with solid secondary offerings.

Hunter Elmore 1B / American Christian Academy , AL / 20286-foot-0, 220-pounds. Advanced physical strength for a rising eighth-grader and uses it to his advantage offensively. Possesses immense pull-side pop hitting from the right side with obvious power projection in the coming years. The right-hander operates from a fairly balanced and narrow stance and has good rhythm throughout his operation before leading a heavy barrel to contact with present bat speed. He posted multiple low-90 EVs throughout BP while taking one of the more impressive rounds of the event.

Brodie Wilson RHP / 1B / Faith Academy, AL / 20276-foot-2, 190-pounds. Another impressive two-way prospect that jumped out in both ways during yesterday’s event has upside on both ends. Obvious physicality to his frame and still has much more development to come in the future, but has plenty to offer right now as a rising freshman. One of the quicker bats from the event hitting from the right side with the intent to drive the ball to both gaps. Features good linear connection throughout his swing and utilizes a controlled leg kick for timing and trigger. On the mound, the right-hander operated comfortably in the low-80s with his fastball coming out of a high ¾ arm slot while possessing a compact arm stroke. He generates quality arm-side run to the pitch, and showed the ability to move it to both halves of the zone. Both secondaries have good traits with the slider working 66-67 mph with good shape and also turning over some heavy-fading changeups in the low-70s.

Carter Gilley SS / Central Phenix City , AL / 20285-foot-7, 125-pounds. Obviously stills tons of more physical development to come but already possesses some high-end skills in multiple facets. Listed as a switch-hitter offensively, the rising eighth-grader took quality hacks from both sides of the plate consistently finding the back net of the cage during BP. The hands and barrel work clean through the zone from both sides of the plate while using a controlled load for timing and trigger. Up the middle, the infielder has an early prep step and uses athletic footwork to put himself in position to field both to his left and his right laterally. Plenty to like and build on for the future.

Brodie Bragg LHP / OF / Spain Park, AL / 20275-foot-10, 150-pounds. Leaner frame with some athleticism that is going to continue to develop over the coming years and carry more strength. Solid skills across the board and looks the part of a future top-of-the-order type hitter with a contact-oriented approach. Features a simple and repeatable left-handed swing that consistently found the sweet spot with nearly each swing. Worked gap-to-gap within his approach using a slightly upward path and controls the barrel exceptionally well for his age. Also a southpaw on the mound with pitch-ability and poured in strikes with his three-pitch mix.
