Birmingham Open: Quick Hits
June 22, 2023
BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Birmingham Open was held on Wednesday, June 21st at Spain Park HS in Birmingham, AL. This was an open event that consisted of prospects in the 2024-2026 classes. These players went through a pro-style workout and took batting practice using Trackman to record hitting metrics. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated bullpens and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement & much more. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Wednesday.
Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from the event. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release Statistical Leaderboards for the event then transition into releasing individual scouting reports for each player in attendance.
Aaron Bailey 3B / OF / McAdory, AL / 20266-foot-2, 185-pounds. Already one of the top power hitters in the rising sophomore class in AL and continued to put on an impressive display during BP. Hitting from the right side, the rising sophomore ranked near the top of most offensive statistical categories from the event. With noticeable added strength to his frame, the right-hander delivered consistent loud contact working gap-to-gap during his round and posted the top exit velocity at 96.5 mph. He also recorded the furthest estimated distance, with one going an estimated 344 ft to go along with an average of 233 ft. He hits from a simple setup with gradual rhythm and throws the hands and barrel quickly through the zone. Also recorded the top outfield velocity at 88 mph.

Wyatt Williams C / 3B / Thompson, AL / 20266-foot-2, 185-pounds. Showcased well during his PBR showcase debut and reaffirmed his ability with a strong day after earning some significant playing time for one of the top programs in Class 7A as a freshman this spring. Possesses some present strength to his frame, but certainly will carry more down the road as he continues to develop. Hitting from a taller, upright stance, the right-hander has a quicker load, slotting the hands back and allowing them to work cleanly through the zone. He has a heavy barrel that delivered consistent gap-to-gap pop and has already shown some glimpses of power during in-game looks. Good catch-and-throw skills, as well.

Colman Gann RHP / Priceville, AL / 2025Uncommitted. 6-foot-3, 180-pounds. Lean and wiry frame with still some projection to come. Established himself as a quality uncommitted right-hander to follow in the rising junior class in AL with a strong bullpen. Showcased good feel for his three-pitch mix throughout and landed all three for strikes with good intent. Fastball operated comfortably in the low-80s and touched 85 mph a couple of times. Featured a late-biting slider ranging 74-75 mph that featured good tilt and swing-and-miss capabilities. Also featured a power changeup that worked 78-80 mph with late fade to the offering. Well-paced delivery and has a whippy and loose arm that comes out of a high ¾ arm slot.

James Lucas C / 3B / Vestavia Hills, AL / 2025Uncommitted. 5-foot-10, 195-pounds. Possesses tons of physical strength throughout his frame with a prototypical catcher's build. Continues his torrid start to the summer and has already accumulated four home runs and double-digit extra base hits. Offensive-minded prospect that looks to hammer balls into both gaps within his approach. Features a controlled top-tap trigger for his load and showcased some of the best bat and hand speed from the event. Swings a heavy barrel through the zone that allows balls to jump off the sweet spot. Accumulated a few low-90 EVs during his round of BP and is sure to be a prospect to follow in the rising junior class in AL.

Paxton Tarver SS / Decatur Heritage, AL / 2025Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 165-pounds. Well-rounded athlete that has added noticeable strength since the last viewing. Ranked near the top of most statistical categories from yesterday’s event with some intriguing tools across the board. Multi-year starter for the Eagles and has produced hitting in the top of the order over the past couple of years. Balanced, athletic setup hitting from the right side of the plate with a shorter stride allowing him to be on-time, and laced balls gap-to-gap during his round of BP and registered a top EV at 91.5 mph. Good action up the middle defensively and recorded one of the top 60 YDs from the event. Another quality prospect to follow in the rising junior class in AL.
