All-State Games: Quick Hits

The Alabama All-State Games was held this past Tuesday, June 8th, at Riddle-Pace Field at Troy University. This event hosted some of the top uncommitted players ranging from the classes of 2022-2025. These players went through an extended defensive I/O, took batting practice using Trackman and Blast Motion sensors, and competed against each other in a gameplay setting in front of numerous college coaches on hand for the event. The talent on hand was as deep as we’ve seen at any of our events, both on the mound and at the plate.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from the event. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release Statistical Leaderboards for the event, then transition into releasing individual scouting reports for each player in attendance.

 

 

Class of 2022

+ RHP Tucker Jackson (Houston Academy, 2022) came into the event with some buzz after reports of the fastball working up around 90 mph this spring, and the uncommitted rising senior certainly elevated his stock with his performance on the bump at the event. Fastball worked 87-88 mph, and touched 89 mph, but what really caught the attention was the overall feel for his secondary offerings. Featured a sharp breaking ball at 72-74 mph that had depth to it and was located at the bottom of the zone, inducing plenty of swings-and-misses. The changeup, however, was arguably his best secondary offering, which showed fade/sink at 79 mph and had excellent command for the pitch. Quick, compact arm stroke.

 

+ RHP Dylan Campbell (Buckhorn, 2022) turned some heads after seeing a bump in velocity since the last look earlier this summer. Athletic 5-10, 150-pounder which saw the athleticism translate to the mound. Works with a low-effort, easy delivery that generates an 85-87, 88 mph fastball with some arm side action to it. Slider showed promise at 75-77 mph with tight 10/4 shape, missed barrels and worked well off the fastball. Has also been a 7.02 runner in the past. Sizable upside here for the rising uncommitted senior.

 

+ RHP/3B Noah Toney (Florence, 2022) has seen the arm take that next step over the course of the past few months, and his performance on the mound on Tuesday certainly helped raise his stock as a prospect. Strong, well-built 6-2, 210-pounder that looks like a bulldog on the mound with elite competitiveness. Pitched around 86-87 mph and was in the zone, and bumped 89 mph once in the outing. Intent to drive the fastball into RHH’s on occasion. Used a 74-75 mph breaking ball with hard 11/5 shape as his lone secondary offering, and landed it for strikes in this look. Numerous JUCO offers already.

 

+ 1B/LHP Sheldon Ott (Houston Academy, 2022) has always been an intriguing prospect to follow, simply because of his physical frame and his left-handed stick. Listed at 6-5, 225-pounds, Ott drove balls to the gap with authority in his BP round. Keeps the weight on the back side well and incorporates the strong lower-half. Upward bat plane combined with strength allows for power, and he showed that tool last week playing in a tournament at LakePoint with a back side double and a home run to dead CF in gameplay. Shouldn’t stay uncommitted for too long if he continues to hit at the pace he has started this summer.

 

+ SS Austin Estes (Piedmont, 2022) performed well in all facets during this event, and showed off some premium athleticism and instincts in the process. 5-9, 165-pound frame, but packs a punch and uses his 6.72 speed to impact the game with his skill set. Was on the barrel consistently during his round of BP, and created havoc on the base paths while looking to take the extra base with an aggressive, but controlled, approach to the game. Hard-nosed player that is a good football player, as well.



Class of 2023

+ RHP/3B Jake DeValk (Bayside Academy, 2023) had one of the biggest performances of the day, both on the mound and at the plate. 6-3, 190-pounder that used his big and physical frame to hammer balls into the gaps, posting the top EV of the event at 101 mph. Jumped on the mound for an inning of work, and pounded the fastball at 87-88, 90 mph (2350 rpm) to arm side for the most part of the outing. Breaking ball was 75-78 with 10/4, late-breaking shape and spin up into 2300 rpm’s.

 

+ RHP Zach Stevens (Stanhope Elmore, 2023) was another pitcher who turned a bunch of heads at the event with his showing on the mound. Came out pumping strikes at 89-90 mph on the Trackman, and even touched 91 mph on the stadium gun. Featured a big breaker with hard bite to it at 75-76, and posted some of the highest spin rates of the event with 2600 rpm’s. Showed the ability to land both pitches in the zone for strikes for the duration of his outing, which resulted in a few strikeouts. Athletic 6-0, 185-pounds with a lightning fast arm action.

 

+ OF Coleman Mizell (Hartselle, 2023) has quickly cemented himself as one of the top athletes and left-handed bats in the 2023 class in Alabama. A strong 6-3, 215-pounds, Mizell opted not to run the 60 YD, but has shown 6.80 speed at prior PBR events. The Alabama recruit was constantly on the barrel during his BP round, showing a middle-to-pull side approach that generated a 100 mph EV and 385 ft. of carry on the Trackman. Led the event from the outfield with a 92 mph velo on the throws to the plate. Plenty of high level tools across the board.

 

+ C/SS Ty Sanderson (Grissom, 2023) is one of the more polished hitters in the rising junior class in Alabama. Smooth, but explosive off the bat from the left side with looseness in the hands shown during BP. Consistent hard-hit balls back up the box with a 71.4% line drive percentage during his round of BP. Versatile defender that receives and blocks well behind the plate, but looked natural playing shortstop during gameplay. High follow that’s coming off a sophomore season where he was at the top of the offensive statistical categories for the 7A Tigers.

 

+ RHP/OF Banks Langston (Russellville, 2023) is a stellar athlete who performed well in all facets of the game at the event on Tuesday. Wiry 6-0, 160-pound frame that opened up running an easy sub-7.0 laser-timed 60 YD, then posted the second-best OF velo of the day at 91 mph. Consistently worked at the 85-86 mph mark, and even touched 87 mph on the stadium gun. Tunneled a 74-75 mph slider with 2400 rpm’s off the fastball down in the zone. Turned over some impressive changeups with the same action & intent as the fastball for strikes at 78 mph. Handled the bat well during BP as well, making for a solid day at the event.

 

+ RHP Chase Ambrose (Buckhorn, 2023) was a Future Gamer last summer playing up a year with 2022’s, and he’s added some more ticks on his fastball since that event with noticeable strength added to a 5-11, 180-pound frame. Was exclusively 88-89 mph with his fastball, and featured run and life through the zone. Flashed a hard, tight slider at 80-82 mph with an average spin rate at 2410 rpm’s. Generated some swings and misses on his 82 mph changeup with nearly 11 in. of horizontal break. Really live arm coming out of a high ¾ arm slot, and could become a hot commodity if he continues his recent trend on the mound.

 

+ RHP Josh Gunther (Bayside Academy, 2023) comes off an impressive sophomore campaign which saw multiple no-hitter's and high strikeout numbers en route to a Class 3A runner-up finish. 6-0, 192-pound frame that uses a strong lower-half to drive off the rubber, and produced a fastball that worked 85-87 mph for the duration of the outing. Got plenty of swings-and-misses on elevated fastballs, and featured a late-breaking, downer curveball at 72-73 mph with 2400 rpm's of spin. Long & loose arm action coming out of a 3/4 slot.

 

 

Class of 2024

+ 3B/RHP Braden Booth (Bob Jones, 2024) has steadily continued to raise his level of play and cement himself as one of the top players in the rising sophomore class in Alabama. Projectable 6-1, 170-pound frame, but already looks the part at such a young age. Continued his track record of showing up at events and hammering balls with authority to the gaps, producing a 91 mph EV on the Trackman with a 62.5% line drive percentage. Hopped on the mound during gameplay and ran the fastball up to 87 mph, complimented with a deceptive 81 mph slider and a sharper 73 mph breaking ball with 2250 rpm’s.

 

+ SS/RHP Gatlin Pitts (Bayside Academy, 2024) was another rising sophomore who always seems to elevate his stock after each look. Strong, twitched-up athlete at 5-10, 170-pounds with plenty of barrels during his BP round that posted a 95 mph EV. Ran a 6.84 laser-timed 60 YD, and put that speed on display when he crushed a triple to the back side during gameplay. Jumped on the mound and was equally impressive with a feel for all three pitches. Fastball that was up to 87 mph had some hop to it with a max spin at 2413 rpm’s. Breaking ball had late action at 72 mph with 2500 rpm’s, and the changeup was another quality offering at 74 mph.

 

+ SS Cade Miles (Hartselle, 2024) may not have the most eye-popping metrics across the board as some of his peers, but his lean, projectable 5-11, 153-pound frame and advanced actions suggest plenty of upside down the road. Fluid, whippy barrel from the left side during BP that creates some loft on the swing, and translated to gameplay well with a hard-hit single back up the middle on one at-bat. Rangy defender up the middle, solid arm strength across the diamond suggests the ability to stick there in the future.

 

 

Class of 2025

+ C Noah Blackburn (Mobile Christian, 2025) was one of the few rising freshmen in attendance, but the 5-10, 170-pound backstop held his own playing against older competition. Member of the PBR Junior Future Games team last year, and it’s easy to see the work and strides he’s made physically on his body since. Worked mostly to the pull side with line drives during his round of BP, and displayed advanced defensive skills behind the plate for his age. Chance to continue to elevate his game with continued growth & development down the road as a prospect.
