Alabama Future Games Recap- Outfielders

The outfield position on Team Alabama was supposed to be a strength headed into the event, and that turned out to be the case. The group showed advanced athleticism and really handled the bat well in front of the 300+ college coaches in attendance. Let’s take a look at each outfielder:

Will Passeau (2021, OF/RHP, St. Paul’s) Another one of the standouts for Team Alabama at the Future Games, and he did it as a player and pitcher. On the mound, the ‘21 grad showed a very athletic delivery and made it look pretty easy on the mound. The FB showed nice ASR at 86-88 mph and he touched 89 mph a few times with some sink. The breaking ball is a big time pitch right now and shows big time late depth vs hitters. Big time defender in the OF (7.05 60 yard dash) with plenty of arm strength. From the left side at the plate, the swing is pure and has some violence in it. Does a nice job of getting his weight back to the “launch” position and the hands and barrel really stay short. Showed nice top hand strength really staying through the hitting zone.  Showed pop to all fields and an 89 mph exit velo off of a tee. 

Trey Burrell (2021, OF/SS, Hewitt Trussville) May be small in stature but his game plays big. A quick twitch athlete that can really run (6.85 60 yard dash) in the OF. Does a nice job covering a ton of ground and has nice arm strength at 84 mph from the OF. Throws really stayed on line and he continually gave big hop after big hop to catchers during the defensive workout. Shows a very compact approach at the plate and is very tough to strikeout. Showed a middle of the field line drive approach and used the whole field during AB’s of game play. Does a nice job staying through the hitting zone, creating some juice off of the barrel. Nice looking ‘21 prospect.

Drew Nelson (2022, LHP/OF, Pike Liberal Arts) ‘22 two way player that continued a very impressive summer at the Future Games. The OF play was very solid with plus arm strength as he made several throws at 90 mph from the grass. Not only was the strength in the arm there, but he was consistently accurate with the throws. The left handed bat plays from a wide, even stance producing repeated line drives to the middle of the field during BP. The swing is simple as the foot gets down quickly and the hands follow. There is strength in the hands. Just as impressive on the mound with a very athletic delivery. Knows how to pitch and really commanded both sides of the plate. Loved the tight spin on the breaking ball that he showed the ability to bury in the lower half of the zone. The ASR on the FB is legit and he stayed in the mid 80’s with the pitch, bumping 86 a few times. Impressive ‘22 grad.

Alex Wade (2022, OF/RHP, Madison Academy) Was a two way guy at the event but really projects with the bat down the road. Tall, skinny build for the ‘22 grad that has plenty of room to physically mature, to match a very solid skill set right now. The mid 80’s FB has some late ASR and tends to get in on RH hitters. The mechanics are clean and he does a nice job of keeping the ball hid from hitters. Patrols the OF very well and seems to “glide” as he covers a ton of ground in the grass. Really transfers the ball quickly and the arm strength is very solid. Offensively he starts from a slightly open, narrow stance with a leg kick approach. Staying upright through the swing, the barrel stays in the zone a long time and the back elbow stays slotted, creating a short compact approach. There is juice to all fields and he does a nice job creating backspin. Scorched a 3B to the RCF gap in game play.

Chandler Brewer (2021, OF/1B, Hazel Green) One of the Alabama players that helped his stock in a great way. Shows solid fundamental actions in the OF and showed a nice accurate arm. Can also play 1B. Make no mistake about it, he turned heads at the event with his bat. Repeatedly had loud contact in BP and in game play and showed power to the pull side gap. Hammered balls in game play with multiple extra base hits. Has a strong core and the lower half is synched well with the swing. The barrel has some violence through the hitting zone and there is definite thunder in the hands. A 21 to keep an eye on.

This concludes our positional analysis of the impressive group of players that represented Alabama at the recent Future Games. We are already looking forward to the 2020 Future Games. If you are a 2022 or 2023 grad, get to an event to be evaluated for this elite event.
