Alabama Future Games Recap- Infielders

What an athletic group of infielders Alabama brought to the Future Games at LakePoint. This group of infielders defended at a very high level and continually produced quality at bats during the event. Several of these infielders also showed impressive stuff on the mound. For now, let’s take a look at those talented infielders who performed in front of the 300+ college coaches in attendance. 

Trent Hodgdon (2021, RHP/3B, Smiths Station) One of the better standouts for Team Alabama at the Future Games, was equally impressive as a pitcher and as a player. On the mound the FB was 87-88 mph and touched 89 mph on several deliveries. He was able to command that pitch anywhere he wanted from his quick, continuous arm action. The breaking ball is a definite 2 tier pitch with 11/5 shape and is a swing and miss pitch right now. Offensively, Hodgdon showed plus pop off the barrel and a solid middle of the field approach with a slightly tilted bat path. He really showed juice to the backside and a patient approach at the plate. 

Aidan Stewart (2021, RHP/SS, Next Level Academy) Stewart recently moved from Illinois to Alabama and really jumped out with his athleticism, live arm and plus tools. The slender 6’5 switch hitting SS brings a ton of flair to the position but has the glovework and plenty of arm strength to back that up. That arm strength showed in the workout as he threw an event best 94 mph across the diamond. The bat plays from both sides of the plate with plenty of backspin created off the barrel. Presents an upright stance from both sides and easy bat speed through the zone. There is some tilt in the path with nice top hand strength. Stewart “dabbles” in pitching and showcased that arm strength on the mound as well with an electric FB anywhere from 89-91 mph. Could also be a big time prospect on the mound as well. 

Michael Hopkinson (2021, SS/3B, Faith Academy) Slick fielding SS that showed legit range on the IF. Really shows solid feet and plus glove work and the arm strength is plenty good enough. Has some definite “feel” for the position and knows the game very well. Really handles that bat well at the plate with a leg kick approach used to supply some power from the lower half. The hands and barrel stayed short to contact. Showed the ability to use all fields while showcasing a 90 mph exit velo off the tee. Athletic ‘21 follow. 

Matthew Omohundro (2021, 3B/RHP, Dothan) Omohundro has a live arm on the mound and is a drop and drive type guy showing a FB in the 84-86 mph range. Showed nice ability to locate to his glove side and challenged hitters with a heavy FB but make no mistake about it, he has made a name for himself at the plate. The athletic 3B defends well at the hot corner and the arm plays across the diamond also. Starting from a tall, sightly open stance at the plate, the swing is really synched up and he does a nice job of getting through contact. The path has some tilt in it and he showed tremendous juice off the barrel, especially to the pull side. Hit one of the few HR’s in game play of the Future Games. Loud barrel all week. 

Gabriel Broadus (2021, SS/2B, Faith Academy) Solid defender in the middle of the infield that may not be the biggest player but don’t let that fool you. There is plenty of speed and power here. Could easily be a 2B or SS but really covers a ton of ground in the dirt and the arm strength is there (87 mph across the diamond). No questions with the glove and the knowledge of the game. From the right side at the plate, the set up is athletic and he does a nice job keeping his back elbow “slotted” which equates to a very short swing path but there is juice in the bat. He was 90 mph exit velo off of the tee. Has a fairly level swing path which continually produced tilted line drives, mainly to the middle of the field. There are plenty of “quick twitch” actions in Broadus. 

Cameron Snypes (2021, 1B/OF, UMS Wright) Physical 1B that can also double as an OF as well. Showed some nimble feet around the bag and the glove is solid. The power bat from the left side has a ton to like in it. Really creates some bat speed and keeps the barrel in the zone a long time, creating some real bounce off of the barrel. Slightly open stance to begin with and he does a nice job getting the front foot down on time which allows the barrel to be on time as well. Showed some tilt in the bat path and some real nice pull side power. An interesting ‘21 follow. 

William Burgreen (2022, SS/2B, Decatur) Another athletic MIF that has some flair in his game. Can play either middle infield position but may project at 2B at the next level. Does a very nice job on the turn at the bag. The actions in the field are plus and he is solid with the feet and nice flexibility in the hips. Really presents the glove out in front. At the plate, the switch hitter has a very compact approach from both sides with no wasted actions in the set up or swing. Everything works together in the swing and the approach is the same from both sides of the plate. Did a nice job staying gap to gap and showcased an 88 mph exit velocity off of the tee. 

Jack Williamson (2021, RHP/SS, Winfield City) Solid 2 way player that performed well at the Future Games. The solidly built Williamson showed very well on the mound with a heavy FB that was consistently in the 84-86 mph range and touched 87 mph. There was some ASR as well that seemed to get in on RH hitters. The breaking ball took nice 11/5 shape and he showed the ability to locate it for a strike and as a swing and miss pitch. A level swing path and nice top hand strength allowed for a consistent line drive approach at the plate. Very simple set up and a simple load of the hands allowed the barrel to be on time. Had several base hits in game play vs. quality arms. 

Dillon Cook (2021, LHP/1B, Grissom) Cook is a physical specimen (6’4 205 lbs.) that showed very well in the individual workout on Day 1. The glove work was solid and he was 83 mph IF velocity. The bat plays with plenty of juice and he showed that pop with a 92 mph exit velocity off of the tee. Unfortunately Cook hurt his back and was not able to participate after the Day 1 workout. We will definitely follow Cook as the high school spring season gets underway in February.
