OUTLOOK:
The Gordo Greenwave have a long standing tradition of baseball excellence over the years and 2019 was no exception as the Greenwave reached the state semifinals in 3A after winning Area 7. Coach Jonathan Pate returns several key components from last year’s team but he will be calling on several players to provide some offensive production in 2022 but the team does plan on pitching well and defending at a high level. One returner is 2022 3B Ben Capps who will be counted on to drive in runs in the middle of the order. Capps is also a very nice defender at the hot corner. Another 2022 to keep an eye on is SS/3B Tanner Bailey. He is a superb athlete that also doubles as the Greenwave quarterback in football and is drawing some big interest on the gridiron. On the baseball field, Bailey shows very solid actions on the infield and is a vital part of the offensive plan as he usually scores when he gets on base. A third 2022 grad to keep an eye on is C/2B Lawson Neel. Neel is a very versatile player and helps the Greenwave in a number of ways. He shows solid defensive actions behind the plate and also handles the bat very well. Senior OF Drew Porter returns to the 2020 squad and is very solid in the field. He will also be looked on to provide leadership and produce with the bat. Another senior that will be looked on to provide leadership is LHP Clay Herring. The southpaw shows nice pitchability on the mound and can command multiple pitches. He will be counted on to pitch some big innings this year. 2023 3B/RHP Jessie Lang is a freshman to follow over the next few years. He is a very versatile player and could help the Greenwave in a two way role this year on the mound an in the infield. Once again, look for the 2020 version of the Greenwave to be in the think of the 3A south bracket.
