AHSAA Roundup: Southside 5 Hewitt Trussville 3
March 4, 2020
Timely Hitting Lifts Southside over Hewitt Trussville
After jumping out to a 3-0 lead early in the game, Southside surrendered the lead in the bottom of the 6th, only to recapture it in the 7th thanks to clutch hitting from the top of the Panthers lineup. Southside got a great start from 2020 RHP Micah Phillips. The lanky righty tossed 6 innings, giving up 3ER on just 4 hits while striking out 3. 2020 RHP Tyler Roberts picked up the save by tossing a scoreless 7th inning, breaking off some sharp breaking balls that got some chase swing and misses. 2020 IF/RHP Tyler Mauldin (#26, NWFSC signee) got the start on the mound for Hewitt. He threw 5 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs (2ER). The stuff was electric, as he featured good life on the fastball and a big, sharp breaking ball to rack up 10 K’s on the night.
Southside got the scoring started in the top of the 1st when 2021 SS Jacob Little (#63) roped a 2-out double over the LF's head. He would come around to score shortly after when 2022 Toren Snow (#54) dropped a single into left. The Panthers would add 2 more runs in the 3rd. 2021 Aulden Battles led off the inning with a double to RCF, was moved over on a perfect bunt hit from Phillips, then scored on an RBI single from Little. Little would eventually come around to score on a Huskies error.
Hewitt would answer back with 2 in the 5th thanks to RBI singles from 2020 Keith Lanum (Bishop St. signee) and 2021 SS Hudson Boren. The Huskies tied the game in the 6th when 2020 Michael Fowler (#7, LSU signee) came around to score on an RBI groundout from 2020 Kahlin Drake. Southside would regain the lead for good in the top of the 7th thanks to RBI singles from Phillips and Snow.
