AHSAA Roundup: Mountain Brook 7 Homewood 3
March 7, 2019
Thursday, March 7
Mountain Brook got a big win in a matchup of top Birmingham area teams.
Mountain Brook came out hot, scoring in each of the first 3 innings, and hung on late to beat cross town foe Homewood. The Spartans got a fantastic start from Edward Berry, the #68 player in our 2020 rankings. The righty started the game by striking out 7 of the first 8 hitters he faced. He scattered 7 hits and just 1BB across 6+ innings of work, striking out 9 and allowing 3 runs (1ER).
OF Will Yarbro (2020, #41) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a solo shot over the right center field wall. The Spartans scored 1 in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd, as 2020 OF Will Baynes scored Yarbro on an RBI single.
Homewood got on the board in the top of the 5th, when 2020 Andrew Rohdy and 2021 John Hall came around to score on a botched pickoff attempt after back to back 2 out singles. 2019 1B Crawford Doyle brought the Patriots within 1 with a sac fly in the top of the 6th. Mountain Brook added 3 insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th as 2020 C Harrison Ware (South Alabama commit) drove in 2 on an RBI triple and scored on a heads up base running play on a dropped 3rd strike. After allowing a leadoff single in the top of the 7th, Berry was lifted for 2020 RHP Clark Griffin, who got the next 3 Patriot hitters to secure the victory.
