Spain Park vs. Briarwood Christian
Freebies were the name of the game as Spain Park took advantage of 8 walks, 2 hit batters, and 2 Lions’ errors to beat Briarwood Christian on Thursday night by a score of 8-3. Patience in the box turned into aggression on the base paths, as the Jaguars racked up 7 stolen bases on the night without being thrown out once.
Spain Park got a great outing on the mound from 2021 LHP Eli Copenhaver. He went 4.1 innings, giving up just 1 hit, 2 BB, and 1 ER to go along with 9 K’s. He showed a true 3 pitch mix with a lively fastball with arm side run, a decent breaking ball, and an above average change up that he utilized mainly against right handed hitters. Jaxson Lucas threw the last 2 innings, striking out 4.
After a tough outing for Briarwood’s starting pitcher, RHP Zach Nuyt was a calming presence for the Lions out of the pen, throwing the last 3.2 innings of the game and not allowing a run.
The Jaguars jumped out to an 8-0 lead after 3 innings and never looked back. Briarwood threatened later in the game, loading the bases in both the 5th and 6th innings, but were only able to push across 3 runs.
The Jaguars leadoff hitter, 2020 OF Cole Ledbetter was the catalyst for the offense, going 2-2, walking twice, and swiping 3 bags. 2020 Adam Wygle was another offensive standout with a walk and an RBI single. Briarwood was led at the plate by the #6 player in our 2021 rankings, Alabama commit Carson McKinney who reached base twice on a walk and a single. Christian Ferguson came off the bench for the Lions and provided a spark, getting hit by a pitch and a single that drove in a run in his only 2 at bats.
