Prep Baseball Canada: Trackman Hitter of the Week

While analytics is not everything when evaluating talent in baseball, it assists in player development, how we evaluate talent in the present, as well as in the future.
The main function of Trackman is to relay pitching and hitting data to scouts and coaches which will allow them to evaluate the player accordingly. This technology can track upwards of 27 different measurements per hit/pitch. Although there is far more data to analyze on the pitching side, it is still important to look at a hitters numbers to fully understand where they currently are, and where they could be as they continue to develop.
This series will highlight one hitter and one pitcher every week from across the country who have stood out at a Prep Baseball Canada showcase with their Trackman numbers. We will cover current metrics, as well as data that lets us forecast and predict what a player may look like down the road.

Colton Ullyett-French 3B / RHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2027Ulyett-French is one of the most physically advanced and talented 2027s in the country. At 6-foot-3, 220-pounds there’s plenty of present strength, but that’s not all. Along with that strength, there’s bat speed that he was able to get up to 83 mph at the Calgary Future Games Trials. Having both a strength based and twitch based swing is a welcome sign as he continues to develop. He has a max exit velocity of 102 mph and showed advanced feel for the barrel, both at the Okotoks Dawgs Scout Day and the Calgary Future Games Trials with an average exit velocity of 88 mph and 95 mph, respectively. He has also shown the ability to elevate consistently. Although it’s only batting practice, that trait is extremely valuable in-game as the least productive batted ball is a ground ball. Avoiding those will add to Ulyett-French’s success and make him more effective as he continues to develop.
