Alberta Insider: Four Underclass Infielders You Need To Know

Dryden Howse SS / C / Foothills Composite, AB / 2020

Dryden Howse, 2020, INF/C
Report: Howse is an advanced left-handed hitter for his age with feel and barrel control and a frame at 6-foot, 165-pounds that will continue to add strength and can carry more size. The young 2020 grad stands out among his peers, as he is a versatile defender who plays in the middle of the infield, as well will pitch when needed. Howse also see’s time and works out behind the dish where he could profile nicely. The swing is what really excited people, it’s loose and fluid, he involves lower half and gets extended with lots of hard contact. Hands are relaxed, he drives the ball to the big part of the field, easy rhythm and chance that he could really develop some power as he matures.

Outlook: Howse looks to be on track for the Future Games in Indianapolis this year as a 2020. He is already receiving major interest from multiple Division 1 programs and should continue to be on coach’s radar as he is only going to get better.

Justin Breen 3B / 1B / Father Mercredi, AB / 2019

Report: Strong right-handed hitter with current strength and will only add more as he matures. Husky, strong upper half and at 6-foot, 190-pounds, moves the barrel around with ease from the right side as Breen looks to drive balls in the air with an uphill bat path. Generates bat speed through the zone as he starts from quiet, simple approach, hands work back and gets into good position to hit, a controlled leg kick keeps him balanced while he gets into backside, its loud off the barrel and Breen has chance to profile as a power guy who still has good feel to hit.

Outlook: Looks to have a breakout year as the tools from an offensive side are there for him to contribute with power numbers this year and really look to get to the next level.

Gage Brebant C / OF / Fort McMurray, AB / 2018

Report: Left-handed hitting unsigned senior who flashes tools and bat speed at the plate. Hands are quick through the zone as he generates well through rotation and his lower half. It’s twitchy with some pop you may not expect. Room to shorten up at times but there is feel and hand eye, one of the sleepers of the 2018 class as Brebant has strength and athleticism at 6-foot, 185-pounds while he also runs with a 60 time of 6.70.

Outlook: There is room to tighten up his throwing and work on arm strength and actions this winter, can see him getting opportunity in the outfield if behind the plate doesn’t work out as the bat and speed is what makes Brebant intriguing and stand out. Few adjustments and he can take the next step.

Tyrese Johnson OF / William Aberhart, AB / 2020

Report: Johnson has a projectable frame at 5-foot-11, 150-pounds as a young 2020 grad that shows rhythm and fluidity in his swing from the right side. Johnson works out of a balanced, athletic position at the plate, controlled leg kick and gets handing moving pre pitch, generates good whip with the barrel and gets extended out front, line drive guy with some gap power, its easy and with added strength gains has a chance to incorporate some more strength.

Outlook: Moves well with ease around the diamond, actions are clean defensively and one Johnson adds strength, he will have a chance to take off as you can already see the difference he has made from last summer to end of fall. Definite one to keep an eye on and track his development.
