February 8, 2018
We would like to thank all who participated in PBR Alberta's 2018 Calgary College Prospect Showcase this past week. This was a great opportunity for 2018-2021 prospects to be put on college radars. Many players impressed during their individual workouts at the showcase.

Alberta Insider: 2018 Calgary College Prospect Showcase - Uncommitted Standouts
Our 2nd Alberta event saw 60 players come out to the Coyote Den Training Center in Calgary, AB. We saw some familiar faces from the Southern Alberta ID along with a talented group of new players who had the opportunity to experience what a Prep Baseball Report showcase event is all about. We are going to take a look at the top uncommitted 2018 grads in attendance, these guys separated themselves from the pack on Saturday, showing they have the tools to play at the next level.
Dirk Eymundson C / RHP / St. Francis Xavier, AB / 2018Rankings StateRank: 12 / POS: 3
Update: Currently ranked 12th overall and 3rd at his position, Eymundson is the hands down the best player still available in his class. His 1.91 was good for top spot amongst a very strong group of catchers on Saturday and an improvement from 1.94 in the fall, he was 79 from the crouch and had an exit velo of 85. He looked strong and in shape, has been working very hard since our last event to improve his numbers and was successful in all categories. He has worked on his swing with a much more balanced approach, staying through the ball with less wrist roll. We don’t expect Eymundson to remain uncommitted for long. |
Zachary Olson 1B / RHP / Notre Dame Red Deer, AB / 2018Update: The 6-foot-4, 210-pound uncommitted 2018 grad was a pleasant surprise in Calgary filling up the top categories stat sheet including the days top exit velo of 90 mph and best fastball on the mound at 84 mph. He definitely looks the part of a college player as far as build and athleticism. Broad shoulders, massive forearms and legs, he is not a soft 210. Olson showed his bat speed and raw power off during his round of BP, still a lot of pop being left at the dish in his lower half. Hands start high with slight pause in load, keeps his hands inside the ball finishing with one hand. Scary potential for plus power here and a lot of fun for a good hitting coach. The Red Deer product was impressive on the mound as well. He is very athletic considering his frame, effortless and relatively clean arm action along with minimal use of lower half shows that Olson projects to be an easy 90 mph guy. Especially when we consider it was January 27th and he has not been throwing regular bullpens during the offseason. |
Rayce Wilkinson SS / 2B / Dr. Ep Scarlett, AB / 2018Rankings StateRank: 28 / POS: 6
Update: The middle infielder has improved in all areas of his game since we last saw him in the fall, most notably his exit velo at 83 compared to 76 at the Southern Alberta event in October. He has gotten stronger and made adjustments at the plate with his hands in attempt to shorten his swing. Wilkinson looked confident during his defensive evaluation, better on the exchange getting it out quicker without losing arm strength. Wilkinson is scheduled for a visit at Jamestown University this upcoming weekend. |
Ethan Sherwood OF / Junior Dinos Academy, AB / 2018Rankings StateRank: 44 / POS: 6
Update: Listed at 5-foot-9, 155-pounds. Sherwood may not be the most intimidating physical presence but there are some tools here that will translate to success at the college level. He is starting to put things together training with the JD Academy, posting an exit velo of 83 mph and position velo of 75 mph both improvements from the previous event. He is figuring it out on the school side as well where he struggled at times last year. Sherwood’s hard work was on display on Saturday as he put together a nice round of BP, showing some improved pop and bat speed, good rhythm and level path with good extension. There is definitely some work to do before he is an everyday guy at a four year school, needs to improve on 60 time and continue to gain strength and size. He is a player that could definitely benefit from a juco with decent weather where he can get reps and develop. |
