4/30/13 - Currently ranked No. 27 in Illinois’ 2014 class; No. 111 overall. Possesses tremendous upside; has ability to become elite prospect in Midwest. Lanky, extremely projectable 6-foot-4, 185-pound frame with long arms and legs and plenty of room to develop. Arm action is clean, easy, quick, loose and athletic, from high-3/4 slot. Strike-thrower with high pitchability. Works with a plan and purpose. Pitches both sides of the plate with confidence. Throws two-seamer and four-seamer; two-seamer shows late arm-side run. Fastball sat 84-85 mph, touching 87 on occasion. Adds and subtracts velocity well depending on count. Not afraid to work inner-half. Slider has potential to be big-time swing-and-miss pitch. Showed ability to throw slider for strikes and bury it, in the 75-76 range. Also throws a curveball (64-68 mph). Has feel for curve, though command and effectiveness are well behind slider. Works fast; maintains tempo and rhythm throughout. Good bloodlines, too. Father, David, pitched at high level; uncle pitched in the big leagues. In game against Hoffman Estates, he allowed one hit in five innings with six strikeouts and no walks. In all, with Trautwein’s athletic arm action, projectable frame and overall stuff, he likely will continue to see his velocity climb in the coming years. High-ceiling prospect.
