Q&A with Ohio Commit Randon Dauman

2018 RHP Randon Dauman of Columbus recently committed to Ohio University. Dauman is currently ranked No. 20 in the Wisconsin Class of 2018. He had a stand out performance at the Madison Preseason ID showcase this past March. Here is a report from the event.

Randon Dauman 3/13/16 - 6-foot, 155-pound right-handed pitcher, lean athletic shape, projectable. Tall and fall delivery, repeatable, works on line with rhythm, solid balance, slight hip turn. Arm action is quick, full draw, high ¾ slot. Fastball is typically straight, some feel, 83-85 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, showed feel, 72-74 mph. Changeup is above average pitch, thrown with arm speed, sinking action, good feel, sat 73-76 mph.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?

Dauman: I thought the recruiting process was going to be a long nerve racking time. But I was way off on that, Greg is a very intelligent guy and prepared me well. In the end it was an easy, and fun process.

PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Dauman: I wanted to go to a program that will compete in every game, and that's what happens at Ohio. I also wanted to have a coaching staff that I could get along with really well, and that's what I got. A bunch of great coaches.

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Dauman: No, I was actually hoping to get a good distance from Wisconsin and explore what's out there.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Was there a particular game or event that you feel turned the corner for you?

Dauman: The showcase event that was held at GRB this winter is what really got my name up on the board, but the exposure in general throughout this summer is what got me a lot of attention.

PBR: Where did the college you chose first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?

Dauman: Ohio heard I threw a No-Hitter in high school, and that opened up communication with them. Then after talking, Coach Wamsley came down to my high school playoff game. After that game we kept in touch weekly where he came to every game I pitched. I really enjoyed every time I talked to Wamsley, he was very up beat and overall a great guy to talk with.

PBR: What do you like most about the college you committed to and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Dauman: I love the coaching staff, that played a big role in my decision. But overall the campus is really nice, and I like the home town feel it gave me. The moment I stepped on campus I got that feeling like this is what home will be.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Dauman: Purdue, Northwestern, and Illinois State

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state, and why?

Dauman: Jeff Holtz, Indiana Commit. He capitalizes on almost every pitching mistake. Its pretty incredible.

PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

Dauman: My Freshman year of high school I felt like I had a really good shot. But I have always worked for the goal, I've been apart of GRB since I was 12, and my dad always pushed me as a kid.

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Dauman: Just never be outworked. There are so many athletes chasing the same dream, and you have to work harder and be better then all of them.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Dauman: Verbally committing to Ohio. It's a step to the main goal.

PBR: Preview your high school season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What are your expectations and goals?

Dauman: Our high school season should go very well. We are returning a lot of varsity players. Expectations are a state title, if it's anything less then you aren’t competing as much as you should.

PBR: Where do you play in the summer? And what has been your most memorable experience with them?

Dauman: I play for GRB, and I don't have a real most memorable moment. I've played for them for so long, and every year is full of highlights.
