Game Recaps: District 3 Championships

District 3 Class A: Lancaster county christian 4, Millersburg 0

In a District ruled by upsets this year, the single A bracket actually got a match up of the top two seeds in the final as defending champion and second seeded Lancaster County Christian took on top seeded Millersburg.  A balanced hitting attack and a solid pitching performance by Kyle Ebersole (right) allowed the Lions to secure the 4-0 win and repeat as champs.

In the top of the first, LCCS was able to jump on the board early and grab a 1-0 lead. This run proved to be enough for Ebersole who had the Millersburg line up off balance all day and finished with six strikeouts in a complete game shutout.

LCCS did tack on two more runs in the fourth after the bottom of the order got things started and the Petersheim brothers, Chandler and Blake, each collected RBI hits. The final LCCS insurance run would come in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch that scored Jeremy Brubaker.

LCCS had ten hits in the game led by Chandler Petersheim who had two extra base hits in his 2-for-5 effort and Jeremy Brubaker who also collected two hits.  Ebersole held Millersburg to five hits across his seven frames and it was losing pitcher Christian Wingard that paced their offense with two hits

Both teams will move on to the Class A state tournament which starts on Monday. Lancaster County Christian matches up against GAMP while Millersburg will see Southern Fulton. Sites and times will be announced and can be found in our state tournament tracker as soon as they are posted.

District 3 Class AA: camp hill 1, upper dauphin area 0

In the nightcap on the island, it was second seeded Camp Hill taking on upstart, eighth seed Upper Dauphin Area in the District 3 AA final.  A pitcher???s duel ensued, but it was a lone first inning run for Camp Hill that clinched the victory. It was Camp Hill???s Andrew Freedenberg that got the better of UDA???s Kyle Glouner (right) on the hill despite Glouner flashing better stuff in the contest.

Camp Hill got things started in the bottom of the first inning with a lead-off single by Jack Dunphy who was then brought home by a booming double over the centerfielder???s head by Kyle Remig. Dunphy and Remig not only accounted for Camp Hill???s only run of the game, but also split four of the Lions five hits.

Meanwhile, the Upper Dauphin offense did not have an answer for the soft throwing righty, Freedenberg. Despite loading the bases twice in the contest, in both the third inning and the crucial final frame, the Trojans could not push a single run across. Freedenberg, who scattered four hits in the game, gave up two of those in the in the top of the seventh when it seemed like UDA might finally break through with two outs in their final at bat. However, Freedenberg was able to induce a fly ball in foul territory down the right field line that was run down for the final out.

No Trojan hitter was able to get more than a single hit in the game. Glouner, the hard luck loser, threw a complete game for UDA, registering two strikeouts while giving up just the one earned run.

Despite the tough loss, both teams will advance to the AA state tournament on Monday. Camp Hill will play Troy Area while Upper Dauphin gets Richland. Make sure to check the state tournament tracker for the latest updates on sites and times.

District 3 Class AAAA: hempfield 6, chambersburg 5

What appeared to be a 10-run mercy rule win in the making for Hempfield turned into a nail biter not decided until the final out was recorded in Hempfield's 6-5 District 3 AAAA title victory over Chambersburg.

The Black Knights jumped on Trojans' starting pitcher Austin Suders for six runs in the first two innings highlighted by two RBI each from Chase Gilbert (top right) and Andrew Corso (bottom right). Conversely, Hempfield starter Derek Manning cruised through the Chambersburg lineup allowing just one hit the first time through the order.

Things changed with two outs and nobody on for Chambersburg in the top of the 3rd inning however. A two-out walk followed by an infield error gave the Trojans some life and they pounced. A triple by Hunter Brindle was followed by three consecutive hits to cut the Hempfield lead to 6-4.

Suders went to work and held Hempfield off the board the remainder of the game, allowing just a Jon Peterson single in the 5th. Chambersburg got to within 6-5 with a 5th inning run, but senior Kyle Arganbright came on in relief to slam the door for the win. Arganbright stranded Chambersburg runners at 1st and 2nd in the 6th with a strikeout. He then worked out of a 2nd and 3rd, two-out jam in the 7th for the save.

Chambersburg advances to the state tournament as the No. 2 seed from District 3 and will play Wyoming Valley West in the first round on June 1. Hempfield will play Pennsbury, the District 1 No. 5 seed, on the same day. Follow our state tournament tracker for complete schedules, locations and times of games. District 3 Class AAAA: Donegal 11, spring grove 5 (8 innings)

The nightcap from Santander Stadium, home of the York Revolution, was a back-and-forth affair that went eight innings. Donegal, on the strength of a six-run explosion in the extra frame, claimed the championship 11-5 to deny the Rockets their first-ever district title.

Offense was rampant early in this game as the two teams traded blows for the first five frames. Adam Kolenda's two-out single in the top of the 5th inning tied the game 5-5 and allowed Donegal to make a call to the bullpen. Ethan Hess came on in relief of Donegal starter Sam Lazowski (right) and tossed four innings of scoreless baseball to pick up the win.

It appeared that Spring Grove was in business to score a dramatic walk-off victory in the 7th when junior Matt Brooks singled with one out and stole second, but Hess induced a fly ball to right for the second out of the inning and a strikeout to send the game to extra innings.

Donegal sent 10 batters to the plate in the 8th to put the game away. Freshman Kyle Hess got the inning started with a triple into the right field corner and senior Ryan Myers scored him with a double for what turned out toe be the game winning RBI. Two walks and three additional hits added up to a six run inning and the eventual 11-5 win.

Lazowski led the Donegal offense with a 4-for-5 night with four RBI. Myers was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Trent Baker went 2-for-5 with two RBI out of the lead-off spot to lead the Spring Grove attack.

Donegal advances to play Franklin Towne Charter on June 1 in the opening round of the state tournament. Spring Grove advances as the No. 2 seed out of District 3 and will play Pottsville Area, the District 11 champions.
