Ontario 12 Days of Christmas: Look Back at Early Commitments

As the early signing period came and went, it was a good year for Ontarians who signed letters of intent to major D1 schools across the U.S.

Here’s our list of Ontario products who are moving in 2016 to their respective programs, and a few younger guys who will stick around for a year before making the leap to college.

In total, there are over 40 players within the 2016 and 2017 classes that have already committed to their post-secondary school.

With the talent and exposure continuing to grow not only in Ontario but throughout the country, we envision that that early commitments will continue to grow as Ontario continues to produce top Division 1 talent year in and year out.

Adam Hall, SS, 2017
Commitment: Texas A&M
Background: Top prospect in the class, 6.50 60-yard runner with plus arm, advanced hitting ability and will only get better. Big time sign for the Aggies, they hope he will be on campus as Hall should receive plenty of interest from MLB clubs.

Cooper Davis, OF, 2017
Commitment: Vanderbilt
Background: Game changing speed with a 6.45 60-yard dash, bat has improved a lot in a year and will only continue to develop as a hitter prior to enrolling at Vandy. Davis has surprising power and can take over a game in many ways. 

Jacob Martins, SS, 2017
Commitment: Canisius
Background: Very versatile player who will play on a Canadian-heavy roster. Understands hitting, will develop some pop, solid defensively. Athletic actions and has big upside.

Andrew Leggo, INF, 2017
Commitment: Arkansas State
Background: Leggo is strong and athletic middle infielder with plus speed who also is a switch hitter. Very high compete level with good hands at the plate with a line drive approach. Profiles as a second baseman but is versatile and can play all over the infield. Expect him to make big strides before entering the university ranks.

Elliott Curtis, SS, 2016
Commitment: Middle Tennessee State
Background: Strong kid with surprising mobility, quickness and softness in the infield. Swings a quick bat, doesn’t get cheated, and will build on an already solid foundation. Was one of the very first commitments for the 2016 class, Middle Tennessee found themselves a good one.

Matt Brash, RHP, 2016
Commitment: Niagara
Background: Righty from Kingston who came out of nowhere. Purple Eagles swooped in and picked up the projectable righty very early in the summer. Sits 84-86, will get up to 90. Lots of room to develop and can easily turn himself into a dude over his time at school.

Gibson Krzeminski, OF, 2016
Commitment: West Virginia
Background: Very talented hitter with plus power and should be able to step in and deliver at the plate for a well established program. Scary part is he’ll add more muscle and athleticism once he enrolls.

Brad Aldred, 3B, 2016
Commitment: UBC
Background: Lots of upside and lots of power from the left side, plus bat speed as already has the ability to go deep. Will fill out and only get stronger. Can play all the corner positions on the field with an above average arm and great actions. Should have an opportunity to get paid to play one day.

Max Wright, C, 2016
Commitment: Indiana State
Background: One of the more well-rounded catchers in his class, knows how to receive, no wasted movements behind the dish. Quiet stance at the dish and works counts, body has become stronger over the winter, easy swing, has knack for hitting and will hit for power.

Andy Yerzy, C, 2016
Commitment: Notre Dame
Background: Big body, projects well, has good bat control from the left side, puts a ton of backspin on the ball with minimal effort. Catching has improved along with body and agility, arm strength is there, good chance he is first Canadian high schooler taken in June this summer.

Nick Howie, OF, 2016
Commitment: Eastern Kentucky
Background: Rare combination of strength, speed and baseball IQ make Howie a solid D1 prospect. Hits with power to all fields and plays a tremendous outfield. 6.54  60-yard dash, EKU gets a top prospect who should be able to contribute early on.

Luke Turino, 2B, 2016
Commitment: Cincinnati
Background: Turino might be the purest hitter in his class. All scouts have the same thing to say about the go-hard athlete – he can flat out hit a baseball, and he hasn’t been overwhelmed at the plate to date. Speed has increased as he ran a 6.67 this fall and he carries that dirtbag type attitude wherever he goes. Defensively he has stepped up and has made gains since last year.

Luke Van Rycheghem, C, 2016
Commitment: Stetson
Background: Very new to catching but already has a good feel for the position. Plus lefty stick with tons of power potential, good body and will fill out. Takes big hacks at the plate and does not get cheated.
