CARY, IL- Whenever a team is riding a long winning streak they never seem to be out of a game no matter how big the deficit. Cary-Grove was riding an 11-game winning streak coming into today’s matchup with No. 18 Crystal Lake South. Despite facing a five run deficit in the third inning, the Trojans completed the comeback with a 10-7 victory Friday afternoon.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first Crystal Lake South added four more runs in the top of the third highlighted by Garrett Bright’s two run double. The Trojans got a run back in the bottom half of the inning after Willie Hartke doubled to lead off the inning and came around to score on Larkin Hanselmann’s groundout.
Facing a four run deficit in the bottom of the fifth the Trojans put together quality at bats and managed to work three walks to load the bases for Wyatt Mascarella with two outs. Mascarella took the first pitch fastball over the right-field fence for a game tying grand slam.
With the game tied Cary Grove reliever Shane Barlas, who entered in the third, worked a 1-2-3 top of the sixth to keep the momentum on the Trojans side. In the bottom of the sixth the first seven Trojan hitters reached base highlighted by two-run doubles from both Larkin Hanselmann and Tyler Pennington giving Cary Grove a 10-5 lead heading to the top of the seventh.
Crystal Lake South would not go down easy in the top of the seventh scoring twice to cut the Trojan lead to 10-7. With two outs the gators got a single from Michael Avella and after Matthew Schingel walked to bring the tying run to the plate Cary Grove coach Don Sutherland summoned Jimmy Perkins from centerfield to stop the rally. Perkins got Dakota Siwula to swing thru a 74 mph curveball to record the save and run the Trojans winning streak to 12 games.
Cary Grove improves to 20-6 on the year and gives itself a two game lead in the loss column in the Fox Valley Valley Division over Crystal Lake South. Crystal Lake South drops to 21-6 on the year. Both teams meet again tomorrow at 10 AM in Crystal Lake to finish up the season series.
