TN State Tourney Report: D-I, Class A

Tim Kay
PBR Tennessee Director of Scouting

The state tournament has concluded and champions earned their title

We will take a look at each classification and discuss the standouts players and champions below that we were able to lay eye son.

Division I, Class A saw an epic Championship game, with Columbia Academy knocking off Loretto 1-0 (in 12 innings) in one of the rare state Championship games where each team was able to start their ace.  You could write a novel just on that game and the atmosphere surrounding the playing field.  In addition to that game, we were in attendance at the South Pittsburg vs. Trinity Christian game, 2 plus innings of the Loretto vs. University School – JC game and the Union City vs. Greenback game (no video due to both cameras being blocked).  We also had a presence at the Loretto vs. Trinity Christian Game 1 on May 24th.  Read up on standouts below:

ALEX HUEY / LHP / COLUMBIA ACADEMY, TN / 2018

FB (77-82, T84), CB (67-70), SL (72-74)

-       9 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 6 BB, 8 K

Freed Hardeman commit came back on 3 days rest to throw a gem.  Medium, athletic frame w/ present lower half strength, projectable.  Pitches from a full wind-up into H ¾ to ¾ release from the third base side of the rubber.  Repeatable with some deception due to throwing slightly across his body.  FB shows occasional short arm-side run.  Medium downer CB gets loopy at times, flashes above average rotation w/ proper shape, above average depth.  ¾ tilt SL w/ proper shape, rotation.  Once he began mixing in the SL, the good swings Loretto was getting on his stuff essentially disappeared.  Around the zone w/ his 3-pitch mix, projects to command, shows ability to move FB in and out.  Generated 13 swing and misses on 53 swings.
