The Prep Baseball Report staff have finished their 1B reports from Oct. 18th in Latham NY. Here is an in-depth look at the 1B that attended our Last Chance Showcase.
Jordan Bernacet, 1B/OF, Schenectady HS, NY (2015)
Bernacet stands at 5-foot-9, 170-pounds with a solidly built frame. From first base he plays with great instincts and feel around the bag. Uses soft hands, quick clean transfer, throws from a mid-3/4 slot, infield velocity was 79 mph and accurate. Plays very comfortable around the bag.
Davis Payne, 1B, CBA HS, NY (2017)
Payne stands 6-foot-4, 205-pounds with incredible size and projection at the corner. At first base he fields the ball out in front of his body, uses good footwork for his size lining up with his target, clean arm action, throws from a high-3/4 slot, infield arm strength at 68 mph. Velocity projection with maturity. At the plate he has next level tools. His setup is relaxed and upright. On the pitch he loads back, powers his hands inside the ball (85 mph exit velo), level through the zone, short path. Long extension out in front with a high balanced finish. Power potential is there, with continued development expect big things from Payne.
Matt McMullen, LHP, LaSalle Institute, NY (2015)
McMullen stands 6-foot-1, 220-pounds and built like a tank. At first he comes off the bag well, fields the ball out in front, stays low, clean exchanged, throws from a high-3/4 slot, infield arm strength at 74 mph. At the plate his setup is relaxed, slightly open and weight back. On the pitch he back loads, small leg lift for timing. He uses a long path, strong hands evidenced by his 85 mph exit velocity, uphill bat plane through the zone, high finish. He ran a 4.41 home to first, 4.50 pro agility time.
Benjamin Ellsworth, 1B, Ballston Spa HS, NY (2016)
Ellsworth stands a solid 5-foot-11, 185-pounds. At first base he gets off the bag well, fields out in front of his body, turns the right way, lines his body up to his target, clean exchange, short arm action, throws from a mid-3/4 slot with infield arm strength at 78 mph. At the plate his setup is upright. On the pitch he uses a back load, short stride, powers his hands to the ball (80 mph exit velocity) long path, uphill bat plane, long extension out in front, high finish. He ran a 4.43 home to first time, pro agility time was 4.5.
James Rubino, LHP, LaSalle Institute, NY (2017)
Rubino stands 6-foot-0, 155-pounds and has a long lean projectable frame. From first base he fields out in front, stays low, back arm action, throws from a mid-3/4 slot, infield arm strength was 76-79 mph. From the plate he bats from the right side, balanced approach, long path, uphill bat plane, extension out in front, high finish. Exit velocity was 77 mph. Home to first time was 4.4, pro agility was 4.53.
