There were several stellar performances turned in last week for Porsche Exchange Player of the Week honors. Ultimately, junior SS Nick Brunson (Champaign Central HS) earned the honors. In case you missed it, here is the story on Brunson’s award-winning week.
Aside from Brunson, here are several other players who received Player of the Week consideration. All statistics were reported by the players’ high school coaches:
+ Matt Albin, RHP/INF, Glenbard North HS, 2014
The unsigned senior posted two wins on the mound, racking up 20 Ks in 12 innings. He allowed only one run and five hits. He also went 6-for-14 with five RBI. Against Glenbard East on Saturday, he struck out 13 in six innings, and went 3-for-4 with four RBI at the plate.
+ Mike Kornacker, RHP/INF, St. Laurence HS, 2014
The Purdue recruit was dominant in his two starts. Against Gordon Tech, he K’d 14, walked none and allowed two infield hits. Then he shut out Providence with 12 Ks and three singles. He also went 4-for-13 with seven runs, three RBI and five stolen bases.
+ Austin Conrod, OF, Morris HS, 2014
Conrod extended his hitting streak to 14 games last week. Against Sycamore, he went 3-for-4, which included the game-winning hit. In another game against Sycamore, he went 2-for-2 with a homer, double, three RBI and three runs scored. He also spurred the comeback victory with a two-run hit in the seventh against Coal City. The leadoff hitter leads Morris with a .456 batting average with 14 RBI.
+ Jake Latz, LHP, Lemont HS, 2014
The LSU-bound lefty was nearly unhittable last week. In two starts, only two runners reached second base. In 13 innings, he struck out 23, walked one, and yielded five hits.
+ Mike Wisz, INF, Lemont HS, 2014
The Houston recruit went 8-for-13 with a homer, triple, two doubles and seven RBI for the Indians last week.
+ Jake Schutta, RHP/INF, Burlington Central HS, 2014
The two-way talent threw a perfect game against Harvard, and struck out 13. Offensively, he went 5-for-12 with five stolen bases and three RBI.
+ Steve McShane, OF, Freeport HS, 2015
The highly athletic outfielder has been on a tear. Last week, he went 11-for-14 with two doubles and two triples.
+ Alec Martinez, INF, Sandburg HS, 2015
In three games last week, Martinez went 8-for-11 with five RBI and three runs scored for the Eagles.
+ Mike Borst, OF/RHP, McHenry HS, 2015
Borst went 13-for-22 with four doubles and five doubles at the plate last week. He also earned a win on the mound pitching in relief. For the season, he’s batting .450 with six doubles and 13 RBI.
+ Nick Drawant, OF, St. Charles North HS, 2014
The unsigned senior continued his torrid hitting last week. For the season, he’s batting .524 with five doubles and 13 RBI.
