Updated Texas 2019 Class Rankings
March 14, 2019
SS Bobby Witt Jr. (Colleyville Heritage HS) continues his reign as the top prospect in the state, and in the updated 2019 Overall Rankings—and he will hold onto it through June’s MLB Draft. Witt has been sensational so far this spring, showing no ill effects of the pressure that can mount as the highest profiled prep prospect, and he has actually surpassed expectations. For four years, the athletic shortstop has consistently proven himself in competition while continuing to sharpen his game and make advancements. His skill level is matched only by his makeup and will to win, which will only excite the future organization that selects him even more, as it is more than likely that he will hear his name called very early in the first round.
Moving up to No. 2 is RHP J.J. Goss (Cypress Ranch HS), Goss has been electric, routinely missing barrels with his 91-94 fastball and devastating, low-80s slider, and looks the part of a future starter. Coming in at No. 3 is 3B Brett Baty (Lake Travis HS), who has split time on the hardwood, and began the year 20-for-36 (.556) with seven home runs, and has quickly emerged as one of the premier power bats in the high school class. Jumping up to No. 4 is RHP Josh Wolf (St. Thomas HS) who's ability to pound a heavy, mid-90s fastball to the bottom of the zone effortlessly, and his high upside, makes him one of the top arms in the country.
Risers
One of the bigger jumps in Texas was made by athletic catcher and McNeese State commit, Jared Alvarez-Lopez (Cypress Ranch HS), who opened the season with five home runs in his first week, and four in 36 hours at Memorial. The defense stands out with his whippy arm, athletic actions, soft hands, and ability to catch a front line staff. SS Brendan Dixon (Argyle HS) is off to a great start this season and is an offensive middle guy that should impact the Texas Longhorns lineup right away next year. CF Rance Rosas (San Angelo Central HS) can really run, and has a simple swing with power. There is plenty of upside to OF/LHP Will Johnston (Keller HS), who pitches in the upper-80’s with tilt and angle and also has juice in his bat from the left side.
Other risers include RHP Thomas Hart (Wakeland HS), RHP Ryan Peters (Cypress Ranch HS), SS/RHP Jake Combs (Cypress Ranch HS), LHP Jack Lynch (Dallas Jesuit), and CF Dillon Carter (Argyle HS).
