Unsigned Senior Spotlight: RHP J.D. Schultz

On Sept. 23, our staff hosted Senior Games at Kapco Park in Mequon, Wis., an invite-only showcase for the area’s top uncommitted seniors. We’ve already published the event’s Statistical Analysis, and we’ll have position-by-position breakdowns a little further down the road. Until then, check out some of the showcase’s top unsigned prospects who merit mentioning over the next couple of weeks within this spotlight.

One of this summer’s diamond-in-the-rough discoveries in Wisconsin has been Stevens Point RHP J.D. Schultz (2019). We got our first live look at Schultz in late August at the Eastern Wisconsin Open in Sheboygan where he was up to 88 mph in his bullpen. He was down a few ticks last weekend at Senior Games but still showed that over-the-top quick arm we had seen in Sheboygan. His fastball is straight but can carry through the zone and he pairs it with an 11/5 curve thrown aggressively with some depth. He struck out five batters in his pair of innings from the Mequon mound. After a solid 2018, Stevens Point is building quite the case for the 2019 Preseason Power 25, headed by its rotation, with Schultz squarely in the mix. His status as a pop-up prospect has him as an interesting upside arm headed into the fall and winter.

Scouting Report

8/20/18 - 6-foot, 180-pound right-handed pitcher. Schultz raised some eyebrows after touching 88 mph in his bullpen session. He has a strong arm from an over the top slot that carries well through the hitting zone. He sat 85-87, straight, some carry through the strike zone. Curveball, 11/5 shape with depth, 64-67 mph. Changeup, straight, 74-75 mph.
