Unsigned Senior Spotlight: OF/LHP Paul Sachen

Jordon Banfield
Arizona Scouting Director

Throughout the year PBR will put the spotlight on a number of uncommitted prospects who show the necessary tools to play at the next level. 2019 Paul Sachen put himself on the radar at the D-Backs Academy Scout Day after a strong spring at Desert Mountain HS. He then took it a step further at the 2019 Top Prospect Games, posting the top 60-yard dash time with a 6.60 and showing the type of contact-oriented approach that makes him an ideal top of the order candidate at the next level. The high-end athlete has shown enough arm strength to stick in CF and moves comfortably out there. Sachen also should be able to offer some value as a left-handed relief option out of the bullpen. Check out the full report below. As always, contact [email protected] or direct message @PBRArizona on Twitter with any questions and/or commitment information.

Scouting Report

6/27/18 - 6-foot, 150-pound frame. Room to add considerable size and strength. Offensively hit from an upright, balanced set up. Shorter stride, rides the hips forward, barrel gets on plane deep in the strike zone, posture tilts over plate at contact, creates lift at times; 81 mph exit velocity. Defensively worked out in the outfield where Sachen showed he could play all three outfield spots. Possesses the speed to play center, running the second best 60-yard dash at the event at 6.60 seconds. Moved confidently to the baseball with proper footwork. Good exchange, long, loose arm action, fast arm; 84 mph outfield velocity. Also hopped up on the mound running his fastball up to 81 mph. Long arm action, forearm outside of 90 degrees before going into layback, drives off back leg aggressively, high ¾ release, soft front knee at times. Fastball featured varying life. Also showed a curveball at 71-72 mph. The projection remaining in Sachen is intriguing.

5/19/18 - Ran a superb 6.69 60-yard dash and is an athletic mover that throws well (86 mph veto) in the outfield. There's some length in the swing and a more contact oriented approach to all fields may benefit him moving forward. Should add strength/mass to very lean 5-foot-11, 150-pound frame as he matures.
