When we first saw Hatboro-Horsham outfielder Eric Lane as a sophomore, he battled well against current Elon right-handed pitcher Robbie Welhaf (whose fastball ranged from 84-90 that day). His 5-foot-9, 175-pound frame belies the left-handed hitter's ability to put a charge in the baseball, as he led the Hatters in extra bases hits as a junior.
At the Eastern PA Open ID Showcase in July, Lane showcased a short, quick stroke and a quiet approach during batting practice, while also sitting 77-79 with his fastball from a three-quarter slot when he toed the rubber.
There are certain things that can't be learned in a showcase setting, however. Standing next to the dugout during one of the Lane's high school games, his leadership qualities and competitiveness were evident in the the way he approached the game and communicated with his teammates during a game they were losing from start to finish.
Following a junior season in which he hit .288, with a .407 on-base percentage (including 14 walks against only 9 strikeouts), and .500 slugging percentage (4 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs), Lane earned third-team all-SOL Continental honors for the second straight season. He also garnered Honorable Mention recognition as pitcher after throwing 18.2 innings while allowing 13 hits and 7 walks, and recording 13 strikeouts.
