Unsigned Senior Showcase: Statistical Analysis

By Illinois Staff

On Sunday, Oct. 6, the PBR Illinois staff hosted its annual fall Unsigned Senior Showcase, providing 2020 grads with the platform to perform ahead of the final offseason of their prep careers. Year after year, this event always seems to spotlight a handful of Illinois seniors who have flown under the radar for too long, bringing them some much-deserved attention.

After publishing our rapid analysis inside of our Quick Hits post yesterday, we’re turning our attention today to a more data-driven look at Sunday’s 2020 showcase.

Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for videos from the showcase to be posted, and in a month or so, we’ll have scouting reports on each of the prospects who made it to The MAX last weekend.

TOP 60-YARD DASH

Five prospects were within 0.09 seconds of each other for the top of the leaderboard of the 60-yard dash, but it was Oak Park River Forest’s Alan Brown who snuck into the top spot with 6.77 mark. He’s one of the better uncommitted prospects in the state’s senior class with tools aplenty, as you will soon find out. Joseph Bacarella (Elmwood Park), Nate Kremkow (Montini Catholic), Brendan Holloway (Vernon Hills), and Tommy Shaw (Kaneland) are all more names to know as high-level athletes still uncommitted on the 2020 board.

MAX FASTBALL VELOCITY

Five follow arms reached 88 mph to tie for the top max fastball velocity from the senior showcase on Sunday. Harrison Dubois (Lincoln-Way Central), Cooper Herold (Minooka), and Will Jaynes (Waubonsie Valley) each were able to hit that number multiple times, too. Beyond these three names, there are still a number of pitchers to know inside this senior group as prospects help fill out recruiting classes.

TOP EXIT VELOCITY

Three prospects in particular impressed with their bat strength, including the aforementioned Brown. His speed/power combination should have him among the more interesting names coming out of this event. Montini Catholic’s Michael Sclafani topped the exit velo leaderboard with a 99 mph high; he’s a two-way talent with big strength that shows up in his batted ball profile, as well as on the mound.

TOP INFIELD VELOCITY

Sclafani’s arm strength appears at the top of this category, too. He was tied atop the charts with Joshua DeLeon (Taft). Keep an eye on Minooka’s Trevor Troyner, Joe Selby (Romeoville), as well as Brendan Slota (Providence Catholic).

TOP OUTFIELD VELOCITY

No one matched Michael Bunch’s (Romeoville) 89 mph high mark from the outfield on Sunday, though Carson Roberts (Wheaton North) was just one tick shy. Roberts came away from The MAX with some real helium as an athletic and strong 6-foot-2, two-way type with physicality attached to his game. He was a stats star, running a 7.02 with a 92 mph exit velocity, and he touched 88 mph on the bump as well.

CATCHER VELOCITY

This group of catchers may have been the best of the showcase, with next-level contributors galore. At the top of the velocity board is Michael Davis (St. Charles North), who also averaged the lowest pop time inside this group. Statistically, Oswego East’s Andrew Petsche looks like a high-follow, too – he was near the top of both this category, as well as our pop time board, all while running a 7.03 with a 94 mph mark at the exit velo station.

TOP POP TIMES

The same set of names atop the catcher velo leaderboard are the ones who recorded the lowest average pop times: Davis, again, leads the way here and Petsche and Joseph Batusich (Joliet Catholic Academy) were all planted at the top three spots, but Mount Carmel’s Jack Gilbert and Marian Catholic’s Trevor Thurston were just fractions of a second off their marks.
