Uncommitted Underclass Spotlight: Joel McGrath, RHP

Scouting Report

Team: Badlands Academy

Background: McGrath is from Kindersley, Saskatchewan and has been a member of the Badlands Academy in Oyen, AB since he was in grade 10. He has just recently turned 16 years old and is growing at a rapid pace. Mid-low ¾ arm slot with an easy and loose action, good rhythm in delivery with clean and repeatable mechanics. The Badlands product is still very raw and will need to work on developing lower half strength in order to develop in to a high end college starter. With a good throwing and weight program, consistency, and a few minor tweaks to his mechanics he should work his way into the discussion for top pitching prospects in 2018.

Need to Know: McGrath sits 80-83, getting into the mid-80s at times in the fall season. The velocity will continue to increase as he adds strength, maturity and overall spacial awareness. Throws a tight breaking ball with confidence behind in the count, developing the changeup that has a lot of arm-side life to it. McGrath looks to develop into a weekend starter at the college level that can work ahead of hitters with his fastball and eat up a lot of innings. He will take the mound this spring for Coach Amos and the Badlands Badgers competing against some of the top talent here in Alberta.
