Prep Baseball Report

Uncommitted Spotlight: SS Gehrig Frei

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

Our goal at Prep Baseball Report is to promote high school players, and give them the exposure they need to be able to play at the next level. With the 2020 high school season in limbo, we want to continue to be able to promote players, even when baseball is not being played. Starting today, we will be spotlighting several uncommitted prospects to help them get the exposure they need to play at the next level.

SS Gehrig Frei (South Forsyth, 2021) caught the attention of our scouts over the fall at LakePoint Sports during the Adidas Three Stripe Classic. An athletic 6-foot, 165-pounds, we got the chance to seem again in early March. it was evident he had put time in the weight room, filling out his lower half while still maintaining his natural athletic ability. A switch-hitter, he has the ability to drive the ball to all fields with a mostly line drive approach, at-times he will let it fly and elevate the ball with power. Frei can also make your jaw drop with some really nice plays up the middle. He has an instinctive first step and defends with high effort while still keeping his body under control. A lot to like out of Frei, and there is more to come as he has steadily progressed in all areas of his game.

Scouting Report

10/04/19 - Uncommitted high-follow prospect. Impact player on both sides of the ball. Live-bodied 6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder, shows enough arm strength and actions to stick on the left side of the diamond. Athletic actions across the board; plays hard and under control. Balanced swing with above-average bat speed, level path with a mature presence in the box. Defensively, has an athletic arm, stays low, gets it out front and plays through it well.

10/01/19 - 6-foot-0 165 pounds. Frei was another outstanding infielder the Jackets 17U National squad, he made his impact known defensively and offensively on the day. He had loud contact in half his at bats while drawing multiple free passes, the switch hitter only hit left handed on the day but there was a lot to like about Frei from the left side. Defensively, he turned heads when he made a play in the whole and made a strong accurate accurate jump throw to secure the out on the play. Frei is athletic and looked to be able to man any spot on the infield if called to do so.
