Scouting Report

1/11/20 - The top uncommitted pitcher at the event, 2020 RHP Geoffrey Watkins (Lassiter) stands a lanky, towering 6-foot-6, 195-pounds. Watkins is able to get out front to a high ¾ slot. His fastball played at 84-86 with run and complimented it with a 12/6 curveball that showed late, sharp break.

Watkins is a tall and lanky righty, at 6-foot-6, 195 pounds. He creates good leverage in his delivery and uses a high ¾ slot to deliver the baseball. His arm works off-line slightly and with a low front side, this costs him some deception. He has a power pitcher’s delivery with regard to his hip load, and with added strength, you can see Watkins coming into even more velocity. We have had Watkins in the upper-80s in the past and believe he at least regains that kind arm strength, considering he was more 84-86 mph at the May event. He is showing the ability to spin a quality breaking ball for strikes and plays up off of his fastball because they come out of the same tunnel. His change is a distant third pitch at this time, but will really benefit from getting a higher and stronger front side and giving hitters more to look at.

10/14/18It was good to finally see Geoffrey Watkins at the Deep South Invite. He is a long lanky 6-foot-6 right handed pitcher that stays tall and flashes good angle to a fastball that he runs into the upper 80's with plenty of room for strength gains. On top of a tall frame and good arm strength Watkins shows feel for 2-different breaking ball shapes. He can bury a true 12-6 curve-ball in and out of the zone or add length and tilt to more of a hard slurve. Both offerings show good promise. The young right-hander is already showing velocity and will not be surprised if he adds to it over the coming years. Watkins will be a close follow for us going forward and as he gets stronger could really emerge in our 2020 rankings.
