Prep Baseball Report

Uncommitted Spotlight: OF Preston Gunnell

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

Our goal at Prep Baseball Report is to promote high school players, and give them the exposure they need to be able to play at the next level. With the 2020 high school season in limbo, we want to continue to be able to promote players, even when baseball is not being played. Starting today, we will be spotlighting several uncommitted prospects to help them get the exposure they need to play at the next level.

Today our spotlight centers around OF Preston Gunnell (Woodstock, 2021). We got our first look at Gunnell last spring during the GHSA Playoffs when Woodstock almost pulled off the upset against eventual 7A state finalist Hillgrove, taking them to a decisive third game. At the time, only a sophomore, Gunnell rose to the occasion and played a big part in the Woodstock offense. Fast forward a few months and Gunnell is hitting out of the three hole and manning the hot corner for the Georgia Bombers on their way to capturing the 16U NPI Championship. This spring, the right-handed hitter was a top of the order bat and made the move from third base to the outfield. This has only added a layer of versatility to the athletically built 6-foot-1, 175-pounder. Through all of this, one thing has remained the same, Gunnell's ability to hit. We have seen time and time again that he hammers baseballs to the pull-side with force. He is a smart hitter who plays into his natural strengths and tendencies, looking for fastballs early in the count that he can take to left field. A school at the next level would be smart to make a move on this prospect, who has shown he is willing to do what it takes to win at all costs.

Preston Gunnell

Scouting Report

2/19/20 - 6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder, athletic frame, proportional build with lean strength throughout, projects to add more as he physically matures, knows how to handle the bat. Offensively, is balanced at the plate, high hands drop smoothly on load to an athletic position, short stride, great balance through contact. Has an aggressive approach at the plate, looks for fastballs early in the count and jumps all over them. Pull-side hitter who has shown the ability to hit for power and contact in the past. Quick, strong hands, flick the barrel through the zone smoothly.

6/24/29 - 2021 3B Preston Gunnell (Georgia Bombers) is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound wiry athlete with quick-twitch tendencies. He has loose, athletic hands and is aggressive in the box. Defensively, he ranges well to both sides and is sure-handed. Showed solid arm across the infield from a lower slot.
