Top Profiles of 2020: No. 19 Frederick Wessel

Austin Sharp
Director of Scouting

We continue our countdown of the Top Profiles of 2020 with '22 SS Frederick Wessel (Randolph HS) who comes in at No. 19. Wessel has been a mainstay at PBR events over the past few years and continues to perform at a high level.

Currently ranked as the #15 shortstop in the '22 AL class, we got our most recent look at Wessel at this fall's Alabama/Mississippi Border Battle. At the event in Mississippi, he was clocked at 6.97 while running the 60 YD and showed an above average arm across the infield at 84 mph. His highest exit velocity came at last year's Junior Future Games Trials, which topped at 90 mph. While Wessel is currently uncommitted, he is sure to find a home in the next couple of years. Expect him to be a leader offensively for Randolph come this spring.

6-foot, 170-pound solid frame. Recorded a time of 7.25 in the 60-yard dash. Starts in a tall stance with a small load, then uses a controlled stride to initiate his swing. Bat speed was efficient, displayed rotational swing plane and high finish. Barreled up some balls with some loud contact. Pull side approach. the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 85 mph. While in the infield, made throws at velocities up to 84 mph; had consistent hands, fluid footwork and a quick exchange. Showed consistent accuracy to the bag and a high ¾ slot. Smooth on the mound, showed a ¾ arm angle with consistent arm speed. Uses easy effort in his delivery. Produced a fastball that came in at 81-82 mph and topped out at 83 mph; showed sinking action and very consistent command with heavy movement. Threw a 11/5 curveball (74-75) with sweeping action and glove side control. Has control low in the zone and fading action on his changeup (73-74).

4/28/19

Loudest BP of the day, showing big time pop to the pull side. Left the yard several times and was explosive with the lower half. The hands showed some twitch and and some power and did a nice job of staying on pitches. Was 90 mph exit velo off of a tee. Very athletic in the IF and was light on his feet and did a nice job presenting the glove out front. The arm across the diamond works (81 mph) and he showed real “feel” for the position. On the mound, he showed a FB up to 80 and created some run into RHH. The breaking ball showed nice shape and had tight spin. Really solid actions all the way around on the day

1.20.19- A young, but very impressive 2022 at the event. Another low to the ground player on the infield with nice club presentation and plenty of arm strength across the diamond. A very solid defender. On the mai A young, but very impressive 2022 at the event. Another low to the ground player on the infield with nice club presentation and plenty of arm strength across the diamond. A very solid defender. On the mound  he showed a very loose arm action with ASR on his FB that was up to 80 mph with a tight spin on his breaking ball. At the plate he starts with a narrow square stance and creates some launch in the swing but was predominantly a line drive guy during BP. He did use all fields during his round. A very interesting 2022 to keep an eye on.
