Texas Power 25 Preseason Ranking: Top 10
February 19, 2019
TEXAS, USA - Today, we are proud to bring you the Texas Power 25 Preseason High School Team Ranking. The talent in this state is second to none, and this ranking represents our vast, year round, boots on the ground scouting all over Texas. Our goal is to bring you the most comprehensive list of the top teams in the state, no matter the size of the school, roster, or level.
1. Colleyville Heritage
Coming in at number one is Colleyville Heritage, who has one of the most prolific collections of talent in the entire country on one high school team. Lead by Oklahoma commit, SS Bobby Witt Jr., the No. 1 player in the PBR Overall Rankings, and the PBR HS Draft 100. As good as Witt Jr. is, the Panthers have numerous division one commits all over the field with varsity experience. Mason Greer (Auburn) has held down the reigns at 2B, but could also see time at third when Chandler Freeman (DBU) pitches. Nicolas Balsano (Baylor) is one of the top defensive catchers in the state. LHP Jakob Berger (DBU) gives the Panthers a bonafide number one that has plus feel for three pitches. Jacob Guerrero (New Mexico) has been a mainstay at the top of the order the past two years, and recent transfer Logan Britt (Texas A&M) has light tower power. Also look to Austin Thorp and Edison Ramos to fill a couple of valuable spots in the order. No matter where you look on the field, Colleyville is loaded, if they can get to the seventh inning with a lead, look for Witt Jr. to close out games, he has electric arm speed and a swing-and-miss slider.

2. Argyle
After going 37-0 last year en route to a 4A UIL State Championship. The Eagles lineup, is arguably just as good, if not more complete top to bottom as Colleyville’s. They return almost every player from last year. Headlined by seniors Brenden Dixon (Texas), Dillon Carter (Texas Tech), Hayden Clearman (ACU), Chad Ricker (UTSA), Sean Bolin (Utah), and the King Twins (Austin and Preston)(UTRGV), Coach Griffin has a very complete offensive group that can score runs a number of ways. More returning pieces include Cade Merka (Texas A&M), Alex Gonzales (Baylor), and Bo Hogeboom (Houston). When it comes to doing the little things right, these guys can really defend at a high level with athletic players all over the field. They can bunt for a hit, go first to third, score from second, and they have power from top to bottom. The only real question mark is do they have enough pitching to round out a full staff. With that being said, it will be tough to outscore this club.

3. Cypress Ranch
The Mustangs have two possible first round picks in Matt Thompson and J.J. Goss that will toe the rubber. Both are ranked in the PBR HS Draft 100, and both are committed to Texas A&M. Ranch also has one of the top catchers in the state in Jared Alvarez-Lopez that will provide a steady hand for the pitching staff. Senior SS Jake Combs (Louisiana-Lafayette) along with Jr. 1B Fabian Mayfield will round out the returners and help solidify a defense that will need to bring along some young guys to fill holes in the lineup.

4. Lake Travis
The Caveliers spent much of last year at No. 1 in the Power 25 Ranking, but failed to reach Round Rock. They have something to prove this year with several possible high end draft picks in RHP Jimmy Lewis (LSU), and 3B Brett Baty (Texas). Add in 2019 OF Austin Plante (TCU) with Juniors RHP Storm Heirholzer (TCU), and IF Parker Guerin, and Coach Rodgers group has the pieces in place to make a deep playoff run.

5. The Woodlands
The Highlanders made it all the way to the State Semifinals last season, and they bring back several mainstays that carried that club, including 2019 RHP/3B Will Swope (Texas), and 2020 C Drew Romo (LSU). Romo is the No. 1 Ranked player in the Texas 2020 Class and PBR Overall Ranking anchors the defense behind the plate. Swope carries the pitching staff and holds down the middle of the order as a two-way guy.

6. College Station
If pitching and defense win championships, then Coach Holder’s Cougars have about as good of a team on paper as any in the state. They have ten bonafide returners on the mound, and on defense. Up the middle are two highly ranked catchers in Cole Marler (Lamar) and Chanden Scamardo who can both hit for power, with SS Kit Cawley, 2B Zach Williams, and OF Ben Holbert (Louisiana-Monroe). Brandon Williams will be at third base, while Josh Alexander holds down the other corner and could also see time on the bump, and you have an infield that should be able to handle whatever is put in play. The pitching staff returns two solid left-handers in Bryson Lucas (TCU) and Austin Teel (Wake Forest), and then you also have juniors right-handers Zachary Childers (Baylor) and Dillon Janac (Rice).
Marler7. Sweeny
When it comes to “blue-collar” gritty baseball teams, Sweeny should be one of the first that comes to mind. The Bulldogs made it all the way to the state finals last season, eventually losing to Argyle. They return eight starters from last years club that only had 13 players on their roster when we saw them in the mid season. This could be the year we see a rematch for the 4A UIL State Title in Round Rock.

8. Kingwood
Led by two highly touted juniors in RHP/IF Masyn Winn and SS Tre Richardson, Kingwood has been young the past two years, but these guys don’t back down from anyone. Expect them to cash in this year as they now have more varsity experience. Both Winn and Richardson can play in the middle of the field, so expect the defense to be solid, depending on who is pitching. The key here is that both these guys are winners, and compete at a high level.

9. CC Veterans Memorial
We saw these guys in Round Rock last year and they can really play catch on the infield, plus they have several strike throwers on the mound, and serious juice in the middle of the order with bangers M.J. Rodriguez (Oklahoma State) and Daylan Pena.
