Talented 2021 Players

Shooter Hunt
National Crosschecker

This week, On the Hunt takes a look at some 2021 players from across the country who have a chance to turn heads this summer. While each player is still years away from reaching the college ranks, there is plenty to dream on with their current tools. Whether a potential two-way prospect, a physical bat, or a starting pitcher, each player is one that schools will want to get eyes on moving forwards. Players this week are from: Colorado, Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, and Tennessee.

Nikolas Mazza SS / RHP / Madison Ridgeland Academy, MS / 2021

Mazza has the athleticism and tools that could help him develop into a two-way prospect at the next level as he matures. Currently, 5-foot-9, 160-pounds, the left-handed hitter possesses quick hands and strength through the zone while at the plate. Setting up taller and balanced, he rocks back into his load with a slight bat wrap before showcasing some lag through the zone on a flat path with a high, loose finish. He demonstrates the ability to work line drives to all fields, and has a chance to develop gap to gap power moving forward. On the infield, he showcases natural footwork and clean hands that allow him to play through ground balls while showing off a strong, 85 mph arm across the diamond. Also up to 85 mph on the mound, the right-handed pitcher has a simple delivery with a “drop and drive” stride that works linear to the plate. His arm is athletic and quick, and the ball jumps out of his hand. His secondary offerings are still developing, some, including an 11/5 breaking ball (62-63) with more gradual break as well as a changeup at 70-71. Overall, Mazza’s feel for the barrel from the left side combined with quality infield play and the possibility of contributing on the mound should have recruiters monitoring his progress in the future.
