Super 60 Spotlight: Nicholas Chittum

 

+ Chicago Scouts Association brought with them a collection of the best players primarily from Illinois and Wisconsin, but it was Michigan’s RHP Nick Chittum (Gross Ile HS, MI; Eastern Michigan commit) who starred from the bump. In front of a sea of scouts, Chittum continually spotted his hard 88-91 mph fastball in the upper third of the zone and bats just couldn’t keep up. The Eastern Michigan commit was also a standout at our Midwest ProCase event in July and demonstrated a little more polish in Westfield this weekend. The separator for Chittum is his changeup, thrown aggressively and at arm speed, that features swing-and-miss fade with deception. The breaking ball also features some late bite, making him a tough at-bat, no matter what.

 

 

Pitching: On the mound has a calm motion working to his balance point after raising his hands above his head. Steps back throwing with an easy arm action from a high 3/4 arm angle. Fastball is easy out the hand sitting 88-89 mph. Deceptive change 68-69 mph up that  is thrown with the same arm speed as his fastball. Good command on the pitch. Curve has an 11/5 break down in the zone 72-75 mph with  some late bite. Power arm.

 

 

Positional Profile: RHP 
Body: 6-foot-2, 190-pounds. Proportional build. 
Delivery: Full windup, regular effort, works online.
Arm Action: RH. Long arm action, loose, quick arm, high 3/4 slot, slight recoil finish.
FB: T91, 87-90 mph. Occasionally creates angle, slight arm side run.
CB: 75-76 mph. 11/5 shape, flashes depth.
CH: 75 mph. Straight change, occasional sink.

 

 

Mechanics: Steps left and reaches his balance point with ease, throwing with easy arm action.
Fastball: Easy out the hand sitting 85-88 mph with late arm side run.
Curve: Sweeping action on the curve has a feel for the spin 67-69 mph.
Change up: Thrown with good arm deception low in the zone for strikes 73-74 mph.
