APPLETON, WI – Simply put, right-handed pitcher Austin Schulfer, dominated the Bay Port Pirates on Tuesday night. The junior right hander was coming off recording the save in SPASH’s quarterfinal win over Kenosha Bradford and he looked primed and ready to go for his semifinal date with Bay Port as the Panther s pulled away with a 14-5 win.
After letting up two runs in the first on a two run single by sophomore Joey Baier, Shulfer went on to leave the Pirates walkng back to the dugout one after another. Schulfer went six innings for SPASH and recorded 12 strikeouts of his 18 outs, including striking out the side in the second and fifth frames. Schulfer blew away the Pirates with his 86-88 mph fastball while touching 89 mph throughout his outing, then when he decided to mix things up Schulfer threw in his 74-77 mph curveball that flashed, plus action on occasion.
On the offensive side of the ball the Panther were relentless in their attack of Bay Port pitchers. SPASH broke the game wide open in the fourth when they scored eight runs on the Pirates. The Panthers simply just chipped away at the scoreboard. At one point in the 13 batter inning, SPASH reached base safely with seven batters in a row, six of which were singles. Cal Giese capped off the rally with a two run single.
Junior Mitchell Mallek had a big day with three hits, including a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Senior Sterling King also posted three hits reaching base in all five at bats with a perfect 3-for-3 day, three singles, three RBI and a run scored.
Stevens Point makes their way to the state title game to take on defending champs Sun Prairie. Both offenses seem to be clicking on all cylinders which should make for an exciting championship game in Appleton.
