The Steinbrenner Warriors edged the Durant Cougars 1-0 in their regional semifinal game last night. 2017 RHP CJ Van Eyk threw a complete game shutout as he ended up being just one pitch better than fellow 2017 Florida State commit Jonah Scolaro, who threw for Durant.
Coming into this contest everyone who was familiar with these two pitchers knew that runs would be scarce and it would likely take only one or two runs total to win. Incredibly, this prediction seemed to be an understatement as Van Eyk and Scolaro combined for 20 strikeouts eight hits allowed.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning when 2016 OF Garrett Raeckers lined a two-out single to right field, scoring 2016 3B Bradley Hession who had singled earlier in the inning.
Luckily for the Warriors, that one run was enough for Van Eyk to shut the door as he seemed to get stronger the last three inning, increasing his velocity and striking out five batters.
Steinbrenner will take on East Lake in their 8A regional final next Tuesday.
