Southwest Standouts (AZ, CO, TX)

Shooter Hunt
National Crosschecker

This week, On the Hunt takes a look at some of the talented, uncommitted players from the western portion of the PBR coverage area. Newest member, Arizona, has long been producing some of the top players in the country, and scouting director, Jordon Banfield, is providing our boots on the ground coverage of the state. Five of the nine players featured this week hail from Arizona while two each from Colorado and Texas check in as prospects to follow this spring and summer. Included on the list are five pitchers, two outfielders, a catcher, and a two-way player.

Jacob Henderson RHP / OF / Mesquite, AZ / 2019

Henderson has the arm and stuff that right-handed hitters have nightmares about. The wiry-strong and athletic, 6-foot-1, 175-pound right-hander strides far across his body before delivering heavy fastballs from a true ¾ slot. Showing the ability to pound the zone with heavy sink on his 85-87 fastball, Henderson stood out at a recent PBR Arizona event. His cross-body stride only adds to his deception, as he commands his fastball, especially to the arm side. His slurvey 70-73 breaking ball is currently an average pitch, but he controls it, and it could make a big jump in the future as he continues to develop and throw it more. Henderson’s athleticism allows him to repeat a difficult slot and delivery with relative ease, and the sinking action on his fastball combined with the ability to throw strikes with it should make him a high priority for most schools. As he continues to add strength and fill out, expect Henderson’s quick arm to produce even more velocity, and if his breaking ball advances, he could be one of the better arms in the 2019 class.
