The Carpenter Cup Classic, a tournament hosted by the Philadelphia Phillies and held annually in south Philadelphia in June, is typically an event populated by recent graduates and rising seniors. So, when Garnet Valley shortstop Liam Bendo, who had just completed his freshman season, went 3-3 (with every ball barreled) in his team's opening round game, it demanded our attention.
A left-handed hitter with a lean, athletic frame, Bendo has an advanced plan at the plate for his age. On that day, he exhibited good rhythm and a simple approach with a short, direct path to the baseball.
Bendo continued his summer with a strong performance at the PBR Mid-Atlantic Border Battle the next month, routinely squaring up the baseball during his at-bats and showcasing solid defensive actions. The 5-foot-11, 165-pounder's prospect status could take another leap if he continues to improve his foot-speed (7.22 in the 60-yard dash) for the defending Central League champion Jaguars.
