Socal Preseason All-State: Catchers Analysis

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA - This week we take a look at some standout performers from the SoCal Preseason All-State that was held at JSerra High School on Saturday, January 5th. Earlier we posted a Quick Hits story with multiple early standouts. Today we bring you the catchers analysis.

Scouting Report

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 5-foot-8, 145-pounds, Strong athletic frame for his age with room for projection. Bats from the right side with nice line drive swing. Hands start high, which can sometimes cause timing issues, but when he made good contact it was loud and hit hard. Power will continue to come too. He's got quick hands and can really drive the ball. Behind the plate, he was one of the more athletic guys at the showcase. Received the ball very well with quiet soft hands. Very strong arm, throws carried through the second baseman's glove. Came out with some wild throws but then settled in and began to show off his strong and accurate arm. Also ran a 7.67 60 yard dash.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 6-foot, 145-pounds, Long athletic frame, with a lot of room to fill out. Bats from the right side with a smooth line drive swing. Made solid contact in BP and managed to drive the ball to all parts of the field. Good bat speed. Swing can get longer sometimes, which leads to timing issues. I expect the bat to improve as he gets older. Very athletic behind the plate, has quick feet to go along with soft hands. Pop times were between 2.22-2.34. Good arm behind the plate and delivered many accurate throws to second. Also ran a 7.50, 60 yard dash. Snyder is an above average athlete and a very talented young player.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 5-foot-8, 155-pounds, Small, athletic frame, with some projection remaining in his frame. Hits from the right side of the plate with a nice line drive swing. Generates excellent bat speed with good leverage in his swing. His whole BP round consisted of hard hit line drives to all fields. Behind the plate, he was very quick on his feet, pop times ranged from 2.13-2.22. Showed average arm strength behind the plate but I expect this tool to improve. Made accurate throws to second and also blocked the plate very well. Showed an average run tool, ran a 7.44 60 yard dash. Flashberg showed his impressive bat and athleticism behind the plate at the showcase, very intriguing player.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 5-foot-10, 158-pounds, medium athletic frame, with projection remaining in his frame. Hits from the right side with a nice smooth compact swing. Generated some of the most impressive bat speed at the showcase. Has quick hands, and has the ability to turn on pitches. Drove the ball very well, and showed off some power. Behind the plate, he has many raw skills. He was quick on his feet, with pop times between 2.22-2.31. Had some troubles with exchanges but with his athleticism, this should improve. Very strong arm but was not very accurate, needs to improve this tool to stay behind the dish. Also ran a 7.67 60 yard dash. Also an outfielder although he didn't work out there at this event. Lanier has many raw tools that could to turn into average or above tools; very exciting talented young player.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 6-foot, 165-pounds, lean athletic wiry frame, with projection remaining in his frame. Hits from the right side, with a balanced line drive swing. Has quick loose hands, to go along with good present bat speed. He incorporates his lower half into his swing generating his present power. His swing can get long at times, shortening it up may improve his timing. He drove ball well to all fields. Defensively, he moves very well behind the plate and his pop times ranged from 2.00-2.16. Showed a very strong arm, all of his throws had carry to them. He did lack accuracy in his throws. One of the faster catchers at the showcase, ran a 7.38 60 yard dash.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 6-foot, 165-pounds, long athletic frame with projection remaining in his frame. Batting from the right side, Valenzuela starts with his elbow high with a small leg kick. Generates good bat speed and drove the ball to the opposite field very well. Was very impressive with the bat. Behind the plate, Valenzuela receives the ball very well with quiet soft hands. Shows framing skills. Was quick on his feet behind the dish with pop times ranging from 2.12-2.18. Showed off a strong loose arm with some accuracy. Arm can get a little loopy, causing errant throws. Valenzuela is an above average athlete with a good bat that should continue to improve.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 5-foot-11, 165-pounds, strong, athletic build with some projection remaining in his frame. Batting from the right hand side with very a impressive bat. Loads well, with a small leg kick. Ball jumps of the bat, exit velocity reached 82 mph. Showed impressive barrel control, with a nice bat path. Impressed with his hands, very loose and quick during his swing. Definsevely, Briones showcased many skills behind the plate. Received the ball very well with quiet soft hands. Made strong accurate throws to second. Pop times ranged between 1.87-2.03. Exchanges were quick and clean as well. Briones is a high upside prospect that shows a lot of potential with his bat and defense.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 5-foot-10, 170-pounds, big strong build with some projection remaining in his frame. Hitting from the right side, Rumenapp has a nice load with a small leg kick. Has good bat speed, to go along with quick hands. Lots of body parts moving in his swing, more balance will allow for more consistent contact. Defensively, Rumenapp was a big target that received the ball well. Made strong and very accurate throws to second. Blocked the ball well, keeping it in front of him. His pop times ranged from 1.93-2.21. Rumenapp's bat is raw but he has many plus present tools behind the plate; prospect to watch.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 5-foot-9, 170-pounds, strong stocky build with some projection remaining in his frame. Batting from the right side, Klein has a very twitchy swing. He has good bat speed to go along with quick hands. During his load, He does a double toe tap which can mess with his timing. When he has good timing and gets his foot down, he hits the ball hard for gap power. Defensively, Klein has soft hands and does a good job of receiving. Had nice smooth exchanges, pop times ranged from 2.18-2.28. Showcased some arm strength behind the plate, and made accurate throws around the bag. Klein has a unique swing but he is very loose and athletic.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 5-foot-10, 175-pounds, strong athletic build, with some projection remaining in his frame. Batting from the right side exhibits nice swing with good leverage and barrel controls. Rocha showcased his power bat during his BP round; power really projects. Very impressive bat with a lot of potential. Defensively, Rocha has soft hands behind the plate and anticipates pitches very well. Delivered strong accurate throws to second as well. Pop times ranged 2.04-2.11. Rocha has a raw power bat, to go along with good defensive skills.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 5-foot-11, 175-pounds, strong, athletic build, with some projection remaining in his frame. Batting from the right side with a wide stance and a small leg kick, Maldonado showed excellent bat speed, with quick hands. Had trouble staying balanced during his swing which caused contact issues. When he made good contact, he drove the ball with good extension in his swing. Defensively, Maldonado presents a large frame behind the plate. Very quick and agile on his feet. Pop times ranged from 2.21-2.25.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 5-foot-10, 175-pounds, USD commit. Strong stocky build with little projection remaining in his frame. Batting from the right side, Shor has a nice compact swing. Has excellent present bat speed, and the ball jumps off the bat. Gap-to-gap power presently with over-the-fence power potential. Very impressive hitter for his age. Defensively, Shor is very confident behind the plate, and makes all the right plays. He is quick on his feet and he moves very well for a guy his size. He blocks balls very well and keeps the ball out in front of him. Receiving skills are very impressive, soft hands and locates the ball well. Made strong accurate throws with carry to them. Pop times ranged from 1.92-2.08.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 5-foot-9, 180-pounds, big, strong frame with little projection remaining. Hitting from the right side, Aleman loads well with a nice leg kick. Barrel explodes through the zone with excellent present bat speed. Power is there and will get even better with added strength. Defensively, Aleman has a wide base and receives the ball very well. Gets to the ball well with soft hands. Pop times ranged from 2.02-2.13. Delivered strong throws around the bag as well. Aleman, was one of the stronger players at the showcase where he showed off his power and good defensive skills behind the plate.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 5-foot-10, 185-pounds, large frame with lots of present strength. Batting from the right side, Sandoval has a nice swing with good leverage to it. Incorporates his lower body well into his swing. When he makes contact, it was very loud. Has quick hands with the ability to turn on pitches for power. Lots of power potential in his bat. Defensively, Sandoval is an athlete behind the dish with very quick, agile feet. Pop times ranged from 1.99-2.12. Average arm but made accurate throws. Sandoval has a power bat with a lot more potential, to go along with good defensive skills.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 6-foot-1, 200-pounds, large frame with a strong lower half with little physical projection remaining. Batting from the right side, Welch has a nice line drive swing. Shows present power, registered 88 mph exit velo off the tee. Has good bat speed, to go along with quick hands. Good barrel control with good extension in his swing. Defensively, Welch has a good wide base and receives the ball well. His throwing motion can get long causing his throws to not have as much carry. Made accurate throws around the base. Pop times ranged from 2.02-2.22. Welch has a power bat to go along with solid defensive skills.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 6-foot-3, 215-pounds, Big build with lots of present strength with little physical projection remaining. Batting from the right side, Liolios most impressive tool is his raw power. Drove multiple balls over the fence in his BP round and also registered a 93 mph exit velocity off the tee. Has good present bat speed and has the ability to turn on pitches. Defensively, Liolios presents a large frame and he makes up for quickness deficiencies with his technique. Pop times ranged from 2.03-2.12. Showed of his strong arm with accurate throws as well. Liolios has made lots of improvements to his game and it is showing since we saw him in summer. Appears primed for a big spring.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State, -5-foot-11, 175-pounds, medium, athletic build with physical projection remaining. Batting from the right side, Pyle shows good present bat speed with very quick hands. Makes hard contact with a nice line drive approach. Could benefit from more consistent extension, as he sometimes cuts his swing off in his follow through. Very impressive bat for his age. Defensively he showed all the skills to be an above average catcher. Very agile and quick on his feet. Pop times ranged from 2.08-2.18. Showed arm strength which should continue to improve. Quiet, balanced setup with soft hands. Anticipates pitch location well often beating the ball to the spot. Pyle is a very impressive athlete with a lot of raw potential.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State, -5-foot-11, 175-pounds, long, athletic frame with physical projection remaining. From the right side, Bacura has a nice line drive swing with good bat path. Drove balls to all field during his BP round and registered an velocity of 86 mph. Very impressive hitting skills on display with present gap-to-gap abilities. Defensively, he showcased his athleticism behind the dish. Has soft, quiet hands with a quiet, balanced setup. Footwork is very good, and he does a good job of blocking and keeping the ball out in front of him. Pop times ranged from 2.08-2.18. Very intriguing prospect to follow moving forward.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, big athletic build with some projection remaining in his frame. Batting from the right side, Arroyo showcases a nice line drive swing. In his BP round, Arroyo hit the ball hard with present gap to gap power. Has quick hands to go along with good bat speed projecting added power. Defensively, he was very impressive, showed of his very strong arm. Arroyo's receiving skills were also on display with quiet soft hands behind the dish. Arroyo is physically mature with good bat, to go along with great defense, very intriguing prospect.

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State, -6-foot-1, 185-pounds, long, strong athletic frame with some physical projection remaining. From the right side, Andavolgyi has a line drive approach which he showcased in his BP round with loud line drives to all fields. Registered a 101 mph exit velocity. Has strong hands to go along with good present bat speed. Defensively, Andavolgyi was very skilled behind the plate. Presented a large frame, with short, quick defensive actions. Moved well laterally and kept the ball out in front of him. Showcased some framing skills as well, often beating the ball to the spot. Pop times ranged from 2.00-2.14.

 


Scouting Report

1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, Long, athletic frame with physical projection remaining. Hitting from the left side, Imbach has a nice smooth line drive lefty swing. Was inconsistent during his BP round in terms of his contact point, but did show good bat speed to go along with quick hands. Very simple load with a small leg kick, very controlled and balanced through his swing. Defensively, Imbach was an athlete behind the dish, where he was quick to his feet and moved side to side well. Pop times ranged between 1.94-2.02. Delivered strong and accurate throws around the bag as well. Very intriguing athlete with lots of potential remaining.
