Scout Blog - Sherwood at McMinnville (5/14/21)
May 18, 2021
Continuing our look at HS baseball action in a condensed spring season. Friday brought us over to McMinnville for the first time this spring to check out a Top 10 match-up of two talented and balanced 6A teams. This game had a little bit of everything and brought an intense, playoff-like atmosphere to the diamond.
After McMinnville jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, things looked rather bleak for Sherwood. But slowly but surely the offensive got things going and gave the fans an epic comeback. Sherwood ended up victorious with a final score of 11-8.

After a less than ideal start, Sherwood pieced together a huge comeback in the middle of the game when they rattled off 2 runs in the 4th, 2 in the 5th and then put up a 4 spot in the 6th. After forcing extra innings, Sherwood pushed across 3 runs in the top of the 8th to seal the win.
At the top of the line-up, ‘22 Oregon commit Ian Umlandt and ‘21 Caden Davis combined for 5 of the 11 hits for Sherwood. They were the only 2 players with multi-hit games. They also scored 3 combined runs while adding 5 total RBI.

A defensive miscue from McMinnville leaves the door open for the Bowmen, and they take FULL advantage of it scoring 4️⃣ w/ two outs.
The big blast:

6 other hitters recorded a hit for the Bowmen while ‘21 Jackson Hannan and ‘23 Nick Gribble led the way with 2 runs scored each. ‘21 Everett CC commit Eli Holbert got the scoring started in the bottom of the 4th with his RBI triple and then came in to score on a single from ‘22 Chase Highberger. And from there the offense kept rolling.

On the bump, ‘21 Colby Fox and ‘24 Nolan Umlandt were exceptional in their relief efforts and helped keep the McMinnville offense in check while the offense continued to chip away at the deficit. Umlandt especially had a big outing, going 4 IP with 3 H, 0 R and 4 K. The rising Freshman looks poised to be a name to remember in that class moving forward.
Uncommitted ‘22 SS Cam Christenson also had another good showing for Sherwood. Playing crisp defense while going 1-3 with a R scored and a BB
Uncommitted ‘22 SS Cam Christenson has been great for Sherwood all game.

Lots of energy in the field w/ some quality defensive work thanks to athleticism & glove-to-hand ability.

Uncommitted ‘23 Parker Guinn got the start for McMinnville and was sharp out of the gate. FB works 82-83 from a short, tight arm path. Has that catcher arm action on the bump with a simple, low maintenance delivery. Stays tall throughout with a short stride into a quiet, direct landing. Also showed slurve shaped breaker at 70-71 and occasional CH at 74. Works very quick with aggressive tempo. Goes right after hitters with the full arsenal.
Uncommitted ‘23 C/P Parker Guinn comes out pounding the zone in a dominant first inning for McMinnville.

FB: 82-83
SLV: 70-71
CH: 74
Feel for all 3 & spinning some tight breakers for swing/miss.

Uncommitted ‘22 Braden Woods got things started early for McMinnville with a leadoff single that sparked a 7 run 1st inning. Woods hit multiple hits on the day while adding a run scored and RBI. Showed a contact approach, shortening up and working direct to the ball with quick wrists and a loose barrel.
Uncommitted ‘22 OF Braden Woods set the tone for a big McMinnville 1st w/ a loud leadoff single and added another hit in the frame as the Grizz go on to plate 7️⃣ in the inning.

2-3-4 in the Grizzlies line-up is a formidable trio of hitters with CSU Baskersfield commit ‘22 Ky Hoskinson, ‘23 Parker Guinn and ‘21 Casey Henderson. They combined to score 4 runs in the contest.
