SBA Summer Kickoff Camp: Statistical Analysis

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

In late May, SBA held its SBA Summer Kickoff Camp with some of the top players from the Charlotte region, as well as stretching to the west and dipping down into Florida for talent.  College coaches were on hand to watch as well as players went through a pro-style workout and played controlled scrimmages.

Split into four teams, ranging by age, the players were able to take live BP, workout from a defensive position, and then play in the scrimmage.  Each team played in two modified games.  PBR was on hand collecting data and video on the players involved.  In the coming weeks, player analysis will come out along with video from select prospects.

We begin our look at the SBA Summer Kickoff Camp with a look at some of the stats gathered by PBR and the statistical leaders from the event.

SBA Summer Kickoff Camp: Statistical Analysis

Top Max Fastball

Pitchers threw to hitters in a controlled scrimmage.  PBR was on hand with its radar gun and LED board, allowing college coaches the luxury of sitting in the air conditioned press box at Jack Hughes Park in Piineville, NC.  Pitchers worked 1-2 innings, with an ability to showcase what they do best.  Below are the top Fastballs recorded in the game settings.

Top Positional Velocity - Infielders

Infielders worked out from shortstop, third base, and first base, based on their primary position, taking live ground balls and throwing across the infield.  Coaches were able to evaluate arm strength, carry, and accuracy while evaluating the infielders themselves.  PBR recorded arm strength with a radar gun and the top positional velocities are below.

Top Positional Velocity - Outfielders

Outfielders workout from center field making throws to 3B and to the plate off of batted balls.  Players worked through the balls, allowing coaches to evaluate their footwork, hands, arm strength, and arm accuracy.  PBR was able to record arm strength using a radar gun and the top outfield velocities are below.

Top Catcher Pop Times

Catcher pop times were recorded in the workout setting and in game action.  For the purpose of the statistical look, the pop times entered reflect those taken during the pro-style workout.  Catchers made multiple throws to a middle infielder who was instructed to straddle the bag and let the ball reach the bag before catching it.  Pop times are recorded from the time the ball its the catchers glove to the time hit hits the infielder's glove at 2B.  Coaches are also looking for footwork, arm path, exchanges, carry, and accuracy.  Below are the top catcher pop times from the SBA Summer Kick Camp.
