WILDOMAR, CA. - The Road to the California State Games began at the inaugural Riverside County Preseason All-State held at Elsinore High School. Players descended on the field to show their fall/winter progress in the leadup to the spring season just a few weeks away. The invitation only event drew over 200 requests which was narrowed down to the 80 participants selected.

Players were put through a customary pro-style workout that included a laser-time 60-yard sprint, a round of batting practice, a defensive workout that includes double-play turns for infielders, and concluded with bullpen sessions for pitchers. We purposely did not include games because we didn’t want to put pitchers who aren’t ready to face live hitters in that situation.

As we dive deeper into our notes and videos we will release more post-event content. Earlier we released our Quick Hits highlighting 20 early standouts, the Statistical Analysis and now we'll take a look at the infielders from the event.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Briseno in this type of setting, but have seen him in multiple game situations and know how talented the Long Beach State commit is. Briseno was a standout in the workout and put his tools on display for all to admire. BP round was loud showing his quick, strong hands getting the barrel through the zone consistently hitting the ball hard. Currently has gap-to-gap power with occasional ability to drive the ball over the right field wall.  Will have high doubles totals until he adds more strength.  Displayed proper footwork defensively and exhibited smooth, clean actions in his ground ball session.  Arm tool is plus showing us he had the strongest arm in the group with 89MPH across the diamond. Quality everyday player that add depth to any lineup. Will be fun to follow for the next couple years.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. Howarth continues to impress our staff with every viewing. Has a large, sturdy frame and more athletic than he gets credit for. Demonstrates excellent leverage, and drives the ball well. Gets good backspin and loft on pitches down in the zone. Howarth shows clean, efficient swing mechanics, and projects over the fence power as he matures. Solid defensively at first base with excellent flexibility for a big frame, natural footwork around the bag and receives well. Will be fun to watch for the next few years.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our second look at Johnson in this type of setting. Has made adjustments at the plate since our last viewing. Setup is more balanced, hands sit higher by ear, and the leg kick trigger is more pronounced. Squared the ball up consistently in his BP round using the whole field. Had a crisp ground ball session using proper footwork, demonstrated the ability to make strong accurate throws from all angles with correct and easy arm action.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our second look at Takeuchi in this type of setting and he has made all around gains since our last viewing. One of the standouts on the day Takeuchi showed well all around and took a focussed BP round spraying balls with authority all over the field.  Was crisp in his ground ball session showing athleticism and making all the plays left to right. Displayed an above average arm tool on throws to first base with carry and accuracy.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Garcia. Stands on a small, thin frame, high waist with ample room to add weight and muscle. Sets up with a balanced, regular stance with feet shoulder width apart and hands positioned by ear. Shows an opposite field approach with average bat speed currently.  Added strength will allow Garcia to get to the inside pitch and drive it. Ground ball round was clean and picked out the proper hops but had issues making accurate, strong throws to first base.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Serrato. Has a projectable, proportional frame, high waist, long arms and legs that will allow him to add weight and muscle. Has significant physical projection remaining. Sets up tall, narrow and slightly open in the box. Shows a natural left handed swing, with minimal leg kick and foot strike. Demonstrated the ability to square the ball up consistently. With added strength Serrato will be able to drive balls into gaps, and within a couple years we should see over the fence power potential. Took ground ball rounds at third base and shortstop showing his versatility and athleticism. The arm tool is average currently, but has clean mechanics and throws to first base are accurate and online.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This our first look at Arambula III in this setting. Has proportional, lean, athletic frame. Long arms and legs that lacks strength on build at current time but projects to put on muscle mass and all-around strength as he matures. Arambula III displayed an aggressive approach at the plate with solid, loud contact during his BP round. Has gap power currently, but with added strength could possess over the fence power potential. Arambula III is rangy and moves well defensively with excellent, soft, fast hands. Showed well in his ground ball round and displays a strong accurate arm and can turn a smooth double play

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our second look at Lusic in this type of setting. Stands on a medium; wiry, athletic build that currently lacks overall strength in body. He has gone through a growth spurt and we project Lusic adding muscle mass and still maintaining his athleticism as he matures physically. Displayed the ability in his BP round to handle the barrel and use both sides of the field with good hand-eye coordination. He exhibits excellent bat-to-ball skills. Arm tool is a tic above average and accurate.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Cesena in this type of setting. Has, long, lean, frame that could withstand more weight and muscle. Participated in multiple aspects of the workout. Started off the day with an average 60. Looks comfortable in the box with a balanced stance, smooth load, toe-tap trigger and slight uppercut swing path to contact. Turned out a solid defensive round and showed the ability to pick up the routine ground ball and make strong accurate throws to first base. Adding weight and muscle will improve overall game.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Oursler in this type of setting. Has small, muscular, compact, athletic frame. Starts balanced in the box, slightly open with minimal hand load. Pick-up-put-down foot strike with aggressive approach to contact. Ball jumps off bat and demonstrated he can hit to all fields. Showed well in his defensive round looking relaxed and taking proper angles with correct footwork. Displayed an average arm with accurate throws to first base and can throw on the run.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Giesegh in this type of setting. Stands on medium/large, proportional, athletic frame. Started the day with a good 60 time. Looks comfortable in the box, stands tall, with open stance. Has soft foot strike on approach to contact, with an aggressive swing. Ball gets backspin and carry. Adding strength will allow him to get to the inside pitch and drive it. Showed good athleticism and footwork around the bag, and is able to turn the double play with ease. Demonstrate the ability to make strong, accurate throws with proper mechanics.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Manness in this type of setting. Tall, lean, frame with significant room to add weight and muscle. Long arms, legs and high waist. Shows a busy setup in the box and with his length there are a lot of moving parts to get barrel to contact, often squaring them up. Drops hands low in the slot at contact with good bat speed. Took a solid ground ball round making the routine plays demonstrating his athleticism. Arm tool is average at the moment but project above average or plus in the future.  You can dream on the body and hope he makes consistent physical gains. If he continues to grow, could see a position change.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our second look at Eddy in this type of setting. Large, tall, frame with long arms and legs. There is significant room for physical maturity even at his current size. Starts from an open stance, hands positioned in the middle of his body. Has minimal hand load and stride. Shows good bat speed through the zone, with a high finish. Squared up the ball consistently in his BP round. Moves well left and right for a large frame and demonstrated his ability to play both corner infield positions. Will be exciting to see him develop for the next few years and see what position he focuses on.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Alvarado in this type of setting. Has extra-large, sturdy frame with power in his legs. Showed well in his BP round, starting from a tall, open stance, high hands, and pronounced leg kick trigger. Demonstrates good bat speed and takes a pull approach. Could tighten up physique, and improved flexibility would greatly improve his tools and overall game.  Profiles as first baseman at moment.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our third look at Gutierrez in this type of setting. Last time we saw him, catching was his primary position. Medium sized, proportional, athletic frame with room to add weight and muscle. Took an all fields approach in his BP round squaring up the ball consistently.  Currently a single/doubles hitter, but with added strength we should see him driving more balls in the gaps. Took a crisp ground ball round demonstrating proper footwork, getting around the ball, picking out the correct hops and making accurate throws across the diamond. Adding strength to his overall game will improve his tools.

Scouting Report

INF - Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Thoulion in this type of setting. Physical attributes are as noted in the pitching report. Setup in the box is tall, narrow, slightly open, with pigeon toes. Hands start high and remain there until approach to contact. Shows good bat speed, however adding strength will allow him to get to the inside pitch and drive it. Used an all fields approach during BP round. Thoulion participated in multiple aspects of the workout including the infield and outfield portions where he displayed the ability to field routine balls consistently. Has an average arm that should improve with maturity. Overall, he would be best served focusing on pitching.
