Rawlings Prospects Scout Day - Statistical Analysis

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

On Tuesday August 6th, PBR hosted the Rawlings Prospects for the 3rd straight year, in their PBR Scout Day.  Players in the Rawlings Prospects program were able to go through a full pro-style workout with PBR gathering information and video on each player.  Players ran a laser timed 60, worked out at their defensive position, and took multiple rounds of live BP.  Pitchers were able to throw controlled bullpens.

PBR is continuing to work through all of the information that was gathered.  Today we take a look at some of the top statistical performances from the workout.

The 60 Yard Dash

Position players ran a laser timed 60 on the artificial surface at the scout day.  Three players turned in sub-7.00 sixties with another three under the 7.10 marker.  In total, 15 players ran the 60 with a median time of 7.39.

Exit Velocity

During the offensive evaluations, players worked through an exit velocity station, working off a tee with a radar gun recording top exit velocities off the barrel.  Players had the ability to use their bats, plus test out new Mizuno bats.  Seven players worked at 90 mph or higher off the barrel, with another seven players at 86 or higher.  The median exit velocity from this scout day came in at 89 mph.

Positional Velocity – INF & OF

Players worked out defensively at their primary position.  Outfielders made multiple throws from right field, while infielders worked out from shortstop or first base.  The evaluation of arms can take in a large spectrum of data points including, arm action, release, carry, and accuracy.  The radar reading gives evaluators a small glimpse at carry out of the hand.  Below are the top positional velocities from infielders and outfielders.

Max FB

The Rawlings Prospect pitchers in attendance were able to throw controlled bullpens off the game mound, allowing evaluators to see stuff, command, and mechanics.  Eleven total arms threw on the day with six working at 86 mph or better.  The best fastball clocked at 91, and four arms were 88 or better.  Below are the top fastballs from the workout.
