Rapid Reaction: NY State Games Workout

Shooter Hunt

Held at the beautifully inviting confines of Binghamton University, the PBR New York State Games hosted more than 300 of the top players in the Empire State. On the Hunt was present for the crisp workout day which featured prospects all over the field with upwards of 50 college coaches watching. Below is just a quick glance at some of the New York underclass talent that stood out:

Casey Saucke II SS / RHP / Greece Athena, NY / 2021

Saucke was one of the standouts of my stay in Binghamton, and put himself firmly on the list of players to follow going forward. He is lean and athletic with a developing, 6-foot-1, 170-pound frame that is long with a high waist. Hitting from the right side, Saucke sets up in a narrow, open stance with his hands held next to the ear. He squares with a toe-tap as his hands work down and back before striding out, and working the barrel through the zone with his quick hands that culminate in a high finish. He showed the ability to drive the ball to the pull side gap in batting practice, and even hinted at some present pull side power. The lag his barrel shows in the zone should allow him to spray the ball to all fields, and his continued physical development combined with his more aggressive hips at the plate could lead to even more power in the future. Saucke moved around with natural feel at shortstop, and has a strong chance of sticking at the position moving forward although his athleticism will give him a chance to play pretty much anywhere on the diamond.
