Shon Plack
Kansas Scouting Director
Dalton Mall (Shawnee Mission East, 2018) has committed to Evansville. Mall was a member of Team Select at the 2016 Future Games and participated in the ProCase and Class of 2018 Games this summer.
Here is a look into the recruiting process for Dalton Mall.
PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?
Mall: I really did not know what to expect but I found it more difficult than I initially thought it would. It took some time for me to really find the best fit.
PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?
Mall: It wasn’t a huge factor but Evansville being in driving distance really helped.
PBR: Where did Evansville first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?
Mall: Evansville first noticed me at the PBR Futures Game in Indiana. Our relationship developed as they got to see me pitch more.
PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state and why?
Mall: I think the best player I have faced is Noah Steele. He can hit with power to all fields and change a game with one swing.
PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?.
Mall: I think the best thing you can do is be coachable, try to learn something new from every coach and teammate. Set goals for yourself and work hard towards them.
PBR: What do you do in the offseason to keep yourself in baseball shape and prepare for the upcoming season?
Mall: I work out at PSP3 and take pitching lessons with Andy Shipman.
PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?
Mall: I would definitely have to say winning the 6A State Championship in 2016. Just to be part of that team was something special.
PBR: What do you like most about Evansville and what were the key factors in making your decision?
Mall: I really got along well with all of the coaches especially Coach Fick, the pitching coach, and I felt like I fit their coaching style. I also really liked the small classroom sizes and academics of the school.
PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?
Mall: There were several different schools I talked to throughout the recruiting process but I don’t think any of them felt as good as a fit as Evansville.
PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Was there a particular game or event that you feel turned the corner for you?
Mall: I think the recruiting process really started to heat up at the PBR Futures Games. It was there that a lot of schools saw me for the first time.
PBR: Preview your high school season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What are your expectations and goals?
Mall: We lost a really good senior class last year, but we have a lot of talented and hardworking players to fill the gaps they left. I’m looking forward to a good season and making a run at state.
PBR: Where do you play in the summer? And what has been your most experience with them?
Mall: My summer team is the Mac n Seitz Blacksox and my most memorable moment was when we played in Indiana this summer. We had a lot of fun both on and off the field there.
