Q&A With South Dakota State Commit: Ian Cote (Minnetonka)
December 17, 2014
By Rob Allison
Minnesota State Director
Ian Cote, C, Minnetonka, Class of 2015
PBR: Why did you choose South Dakota State University?
COTE: I chose S. Dakota State mostly because I love the coaching staff. They're genuine men and I can tell they want what's best for me. I also chose SDSU because they have a top quality baseball program, great campus atmosphere, and great athletic facilities.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
COTE: SDSU was my only D1 offer, so it was pretty much the only school I considered.
PBR: Where did they first see you? How did your relationship develop with the coaching staff?
COTE: They first saw me at a Legion tournament in Burnsville, and my relationship with the coaching staff evolved as I had phone conversations with them, as well as visiting Brookings several times.
PBR: What role do you expect to play your first year on campus?
COTE: My first year in Brookings I expect to have a chance to start behind the plate, but that's up to the coaching staff obviously.
PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
COTE: The people that have had the biggest impact on me as a baseball player have been my dad, who played at UND and has always been there throughout my career, and all of my coaches. All have made me a better player and person.
PBR: What have you worked on/improved since last year?
COTE: Since last year I have been working on my blocking, as well as trying to hit for power. If I could add that element to my game it would be huge for me.
PBR: Who is the toughest player that you have faced in Minnesota?
COTE: The toughest player that I've played in Minnesota has got to be Brad Mathiowetz. He's got the best arm I've ever seen at this level and can hit the ball a mile.
PBR: What are your thoughts on the recruiting process? Any advice for future players in your position.
COTE: My advice to future players in my position is just be patient. If you have the skills to play college ball, the schools will find you.
