Progress Report: Jackson Brenna

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

PBR has had the chance to dig through the players and numbers from the past year, we have had a chance to see some players make some significant jumps recently. Today, we will be taking a look at a "Progress Report" feature that highlights players that have shown significant improvement in their game; whether it's on the mechanical end, performance wise, physicality or in the measurable statistic department. The "Progress Report" can be a minor improvement in recent months or a substantial transformation over time. Today we will be taking a look at '21 LHP/1B Jackson Brenna (Shadow Ridge)

2021 LHP/1B Jackson Brenna (Shadow Ridge) uncommitted, last attended a PBR event last summer at our Top Prospect Games in June. He stood out at the event with a long physical frame at 6-foot-2 190-pounds with some explosive actions. Brenna established himself as a two-way prospect that should be monitored into the future. Offensively, swinging from the left-handed side he showed power to RF with an aggressive approach at 89mph exit velocity. He showed good enough actions at 1B to play the position at the high school level that would improve with added athleticism. On the mound, his FB sat 80-82mph thrown from a 3/4 arm slot. His CV showed some decent shape but he struggled to get into favorable counts in his innings of work.

Today, Brenna has increased his athleticism combined with his above average strength. He's looking more mobile in his actions with added body control. Offensively, he was hitting .350 with some power in the middle of Shadow Ridge HS's order before the season was shutdown. He also made one start on the mound, not allowing a run in 4 innings of work while striking out 8 batters. We recently got a chance to see Brenna workout on the mound while he was training at ZB Velocity where he has made some significant improvements. His FB is currently sitting in the 85-87mph range, topping out at 88mph. He's starting to develop some feel for his high spin breaking ball that he is learning to command. Brenna's upside should continue to make him a two-way prospect to follow into the summer.

Scouting Report

6/12/19

6’2 190-pound frame with current strength and more room to add on. Starts with a relaxed, upright stance that’s slightly open. Strides to get square. Elevated the ball well with backspin through the middle of the field. Exit velo was 89 MPH. Good job at 1B getting feet under him to make throws to 2B. Rhythm with feet allowed for accurate throws. Arm was 80 across the infield.

Fastball was 80-82 from a ¾ slot with good downhill plane. Throws across body, adding angle to his release. Fastball was mainly to glove side. Breaking ball had good shape but struggling getting into counts to use it. As he gets more time on the mound, he will turn into a two-way prospect.
